Wow. Not a surprise, but wow. That's painful.

I'm not convinced that's real. It's not that its screechy - its just incredibly off key. It's either not real or she was sick or screwing around or something.

I'm not surprised. If they made every pop singer sing live, you wouldn't have very many pop singers.

Take Britney Spears for example - she won't sing live because she can't, and would be found to be a fraud.

//although Lady GaGa is actually a great singer...

Yeah, that was so completely off key. I don't believe it's real.

Yo, yo, check it out. Girl that was pretty good, for me. I wasn't lovin it, and it was pitchy at times, but I thought it was good. You go girl.

I just loved it, you know Beyonce every week you show us how beautiful and imaginative you are and sometimes when you're on stage I see the magic that comes from you and it makes me want to stand up and give you a big hug.

I must disagree with the other two.. I did not like the performance, it sounded like karaoke.. like something you'd hear on a cruise ship.. i'm sorry but it's true.. you have no chance of winning this competition. I'm sorry.

bassmonkeee 2009-04-22 01:42:25 PM
Not to defend Beyonce, but as someone who has played live many times, it's not easy to sing without good monitors, especially outdoors. And, first thing in the morning? Ugh. So, if they were planning on using a canned vocal feed in the first place, they probably didn't have a live mix in the monitors at all. Which means she couldn't hear herself. So, as bad as it sounds, it's not exactly a true reflection on her singing ability.

it was shockingly bad. but bassmonkee is probably on to something.

back in the day, enrique inglesias (sp???) came in to the stern show to dispel rumors about his horrible singing. that was an entertaining interview - howard's still the best in the business.

I would have included something along the lines of Mary J Blige or Keisha Coles and picking the wrong song.

Yeah, but this isn't singing without monitors....this is the unedited raw board feed. Her mic is on, but she is singing to her own vocal lead track (ie. lip synching with a live mic).

This way she can say "How's everybody doin' out there" or some bullshiat and make it seem like she's been singing all along.

There is a reason they are called "artists" or "performers", and not musicians.

This. To break it down in layman's terms, it's like listening to a person sing along with loud music on their ipod or walkman. They can hear the music they're singing to, but can't hear their own voice to figure out when they are or aren't in tune. (It's also why deaf people talk funny.)

Try it at home -- listen to a track on headphones, nice and loud, and record yourself singing along to it. You'll be far more out of tune (both sharp and flat) than you would ever be if you could actually hear yourself.

The day we portray ourselves as superstars and call ourselves by one name is the day your point is valid.

Without a guide track, most "artists" these days wouldn't even come in vocally on the right beats. They are far more interested in choreography and stage effects than their "art."

The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl in 1964 and 1965 couldn't hear themselves over the deafening screams of teens but they sang on-key anyway(mostly.) They were actual musicians.

As a singer, I can tell you... she wasn't able to hear herself. But she was able to hear a pretty-sounding version and she thought "Oh, I must sound like that". That's exactly how you sound when you're in love with the sound of your own voice

As a live audio engineer for the last 25 years, I can say with the utmost confidence that anyone who thinks she didn't have monitors or couldn't hear herself is deluded or ignorant. As horrible as she may be, Beyonce is "A-level talent". There is no way in hell she is going to perform on the Today show (or anywhere else, for that matter) without all of the appropriate and necessary equipment. Not to mention a soundcheck.

Those aren't hearing aids she's wearing, they are IEMs.

What you heard was the magic of Beyonce, nothing more, nothing less.

So very true. I'm so tired of watching people rush to defend worthless pop stars because they are our generation's top sellers. Sorry, kids. Your generation got screwed. Mom and Dad got the Beatles and the Stones, big brother got the Pixies and Nirvana...and you got Miley Cyrus.

Here's a link to both versions:

http://jezebel.com/5223057/beyonces-real-singing-voice-can-be-shockingly-bad

On the broadcast you can tell that she is NOT singing to a pre-recorded track. You can hear the "air" on her mic and she is off key a couple of times in the broadcast. So the HS version while Beyonce almost 100% did NOT come from the performance that aired.
That is all.

Wow, people are just discovering the harmonizer...fully 50% of the 'POP' stars today have close to awful voices supported ONLY by technology. Unless you are tone deaf I could make you sound decent at worst, and with enough board time, read $$$$, I could make a mute SING WELL :)
