Big Allman Brothers fan here, but Duane's work I love the most, is when he did some cover songs with Wilson Pickett.

- Hey Jude
- Hey Joe
- Sugar Sugar (yes... that one)

... simply incredible.

I liked his work on Herbie Mann's "Push Push" ... that is, aside from his ABB and Derek and the Dominoes work.

I never even heard of that "feud".

/always liked Delaney and Bonnie.

As long as the Allman Brothers keep playing Freebird it's just alright with me.

FTFA: And it's not fair to Duane Allman,,,He had velvet pants himself."

Yeah, this.

Not that I'm an expert but having liked ABB from the start and read a TON about them - books, interviews and articles- this particular story has NEVER come up.

And, as Betts said, Duane could dress like bit-player in 'Lord of the Rings' at times, too.

FTA: But Betts, who left the Allman Brothers Band in 2000, is standing up for Allman

ummm.. more like 'was asked to leave.' and that's putting it politely.

DrZiffle 2009-04-22 02:49:51 PM
Betts was asked to leave for drinking too much, supposedly.

If you are indeed thrown out of the Allman Bros. for drinking too much, you drink too much.

Skyman could have kicked Plant's ass with one hand while peeling the label off a Coricedine bottle with the other hand.

Well, that was a bizarre bolt from the blue. WTF?

actually, it is an incredibly hypocritical reason for gregg to use. he probably just wanted to pay that hack trucks kid less to play the songs.

elizabeth reed is sad.

Oh!!! Oh!!! I can't believe...

I'm sure that sometime during the last forty years, Robert Plant took a moment from counting his money and his record sales, and waded through a couple of dozen gorgeous adoring women, to worry out loud about what Duane Allman may or may not think.

Duane Allman hasn't thought anything for damn near 40 years.

What? No love for the Mule?

This guy just "knows" he didn't say anything like that lol. Yeah, I'm sure your drugged out rock and roll years could not have caused even one slip in your memory lol...

Why would the other guy make it up exactly?

frostus [TotalFark] 2009-04-22 05:00:54 PM
Without Duane the band just wasn't the same. When he was there though, I loved these guys. I even named my daughter Elizabeth after the song. (pops)

So Plant was already Duane's 'idol' and 'one of his gods' in 1969? Either Trucks is full of it, or Duane had incredibly low standards for godhood.

Dog. Skydog.

Excellent musician but one of the more asinine nicknames out there...

Dickey Betts will not stand for Duane's name to be besmirched. Duane always stood up for him when people gave him no recognition, and he gave him plenty of space to play. They were true brothers.

missiv 2009-04-22 11:44:55 PM
Duane was a great slide player. Yes, it was a farking shame Dickie was kicked out of the band. Landing in the nuthut the same evening must have really broke his heart. I remember reading that Duane was a bit tetchy concerning his cocaine stash and really thats it.

/listening to Live at the Filmore fills me with great joy.
//Eat a Peach does the same thing, but the sadness is just as strong.

Duane worked on the recording of "Hey Jude," the 1968 Wilson Pickett album. Pickett called him "Skyman" because he soared when he played. His friends had often called him "Dog" because of his shaggy looks. His new nickname became "Skydog."
