To have an appreciation of Zima, you have to have lived through an era where it was the only alternative to beer and liquor. For the chicks. Giggity.

Yes, it objectively tastes like crap. But that's not the issue.

This dude thought he could cure himself of the HIV he was infecting himself with (by raping someone, no less) by having a shower.

America, no longer the country of the dumbest leader.

/I'll just leave it open as to whether I mean 43 or 44.

It's rather depressing to see South Africa paying for its past sins in the form of a bunch of idiots who are going on to commit a whole slew of new ones.

Down the street, a young man who gave his name as Phuthuma said there was no reason to bother voting. "The party we voted for before didn't do anything," he said, referring to the ruling African National Congress. The new breakaway party, the Congress of the People, was no different, he said.

"Everybody is power obsessed and power hungry," he said.

If only Americans had such a thorough understanding of government. They aren't in it for you, folks.

And now we see the reason that quality universal education is important at all times.

Mr. Mudau said he'd been waiting 10 years for a government-subsidized home. Now he stays in a small, cramped apartment that is dirty and dark. "Something is not right. The people we vote for are only satisfying themselves."

Chin up, pal. There are millions of Democratic voters learning that same lesson.

It will probably take them ten years, too.

better than the new flag.

I'm sure the things would be so much better now if the white government had devoted more attention to the education of blacks and their economic well-being. without those puppet homeland entities or other bullshiat.

but they didn't, so some guy without education and 783 charges of corruption gets to lead the country just because his party happened to come across to the voters as the main force against apartheid, while the sanctions, embargoes and policies of divestment made the national party give up power due to problems in economy.

so much of the afrikaner republiek, they had their chance and blew it.

While it's fantastic that apartheid is over and that all the evil that is attendant to the old regime is gone, it is hard to deny the precipitous decline of South Africa over the past decade. At least they still have a good rugby squad.

The_Sponge: Zima...it's zomething special.

I wrote them with a new slogan years ago during it's heyday: "Zima - it's not just bad, it's nasty". Somehow, they didn't see fit to reply.

erewhon 2009-04-22 04:25:28 PM
and by "it's heyday" I of course meant "its"

Care to back that up in any way? I'm not after a citation, but on what do you base that statement?

/Not the part about the Boks obviously.

Their economy went from being top-ten to falling out of the top 25, for one.

bubbaprog: Their economy went from being top-ten to falling out of the top 25, for one.

rand was stronger than USD from 1961 to 1982, then the sanctions and divestment came in and now its around 9 ZAR per 1 USD. used to be worse when dollar was worth more.

Care to back that up in any way? I'm not after a citation, but on what do you base that statement?

also, crime reports:P? Johannesburg being the second most dangerous city in the world right after Caracas.

hopefully things wont go tits up like they did in Rhodesia Zimbabwe.

Thanks for the replies guys I was interested in your reasoning. Am I right in thinking it is economic and crime figures? Have you looked at things like education, provision of services, housing? Or that whole pesky democracy thing.

I utterly wasn't trying to say SA didn't have it's problems I just fell 'precipitous decline' isn't accurate.

(I'm from Gauteng, most of my family are in SA. I wish I had a photo of Soweto in '96 and one from '08. That would tell the story better then any stats, but meh.)

/SA won't do a Zim but that is a discussion for another day.

no I havent, actually. but if you got a link handy, I'd love to read more about it.

I found a link the other day on some military forums, to an article regarding swedish and british police opening investigations regarding BAE systems and their related firms. namely bribing leading SA politicians when SAAF was purchasing new fighters. so they would favor JAS-39 gripen. also similar case with the finns and their Patria AMV-s being chosen for use by SANDF.

ridiculous, considering that SA can and has developed comparable equipment, from Ratels to Cheetah. sure hope the influence of kleptocrats don't ruin the future of Denel.
