Hahaha, good luck with any kind of Real Estate in this market!

(haven't those two guys been in Foo Fighters since the beginning?)

SDRE were the last emo band of the second wave, and the movement died with their breakup.

Oh well, whatever, nevermind.

Only one of the guys (Nate Mendel) is in Foo Fighters now. William Goldsmith was their original drummer, but he got replaced by Taylor Hawkins.

Great band, great news.

Man I remember when emo was a bunch of nerds wearing some brown ass high water pants, a mens undershirt, chucks or out dated dress shoes, malcolm x glasses, the biggest backpack you could get and some short greasy hair. Then stupid Locust and San Diego hardcore came and changed it all forever, producing what you see today. IMHO of course. It's been over ten years and people still won't give up that look. Stupid Locust. Yes, I have some of their records.

/remembers seeing Still Life in... at least '95.
//I got a packet in the mail the other day and it said "It's coming..." I opened it up and it said "Get off my lawn."

I disagree. The first years of the Vagrant Records era was pretty good not to mention you still had Braid, The Promise Ring and other bands created by the various members of Cap'n Jazz.

That's post-emo indie rock, son.

William Goldsmith was the second Foo Fighters drummer -- the original drummer/guitar player/bass player/lead singer was... *drumroll*... Mr. David Grohl. The self-titled debut album is 99.99% him.

/nitpicky
//apologies

Except that the Foo Fighters didn't exist when he recorded the demos that became the album. Grohl didn't establish the band (or coin the name) until long afterward.

Although there is some indication that there may have been a Foo Fighters drummer before Will. The Foo Fighters Black Box has listed a November 30, 1994, "private house party" show. It may have just been Grohl solo, but if it happened to be a band performance, Goldsmith would have still been on tour with SDRE.

/is super-psyched at the possibly of more SDRE shows
//especially with the original lineup
///caught four shows during the reunion years

don't worry about it scouser. he's just copying what he's learned from fourfa.

i do not like the word emo, but lord help me, much of what i listen to is labeled as such.

fourfa is a good source of info, but I was listening to Julia & cie back in the 90s before the website was ever created.

The world needs more Sunny Day Real Estate.

Wow, I thought Jeremy Enigck was way, way better solo. Sunny Day Real Estate fans, show me better; I only say that because I want to hear full band stuff as good.

if you think that lameness was better than sunny day real estate, your ears need fixing.

i had no idea this band was emo. emo bands all suck, and this band doesnt, are we sure thats what they were?

Yup. They're basically the definition.

"What is emo?" "Bands like Sunny Day Real Estate."

Of course, it's more complex than that (aren't genres always) but it's basically a pretty straight line from hardcore punk through SDRE and the like to today's post/non-emo MTV pop-rock.

UncleScam 2009-04-22 07:21:19 AM
they're debut album is __ amazing __. some of 'the fire theft' is pretty impressive, as well.

seriously, though, is this what rock journalism is doing these days? some idiot drools on twitter, and that's the deal? that gets an article?

While true, I have no clue as to why people waste their time. Between the hyper-specialization of genres and the idiotic "all music is emotional" shiat there's a lot of wasted time.

I'm thising so hard right now over this.

So did Jeremy renounce God yet? I remember after the Rising Tide came out he went crazy for Jesus and then the band broke up. The same thing happened with Velocity Girl. Was there something in the water back then?

jimb213 2009-04-22 10:40:45 AM
That would be awesome. I go see Jeremy Enigk solo every chance I get, saw The Fire Theft (with William on drums and I think Nate on bass) with Grandaddy... never got to see SDRE, though. I was too into Dream Theater when SDRE was around to really appreciate them...

Last time I saw Jeremy (in 2008), he did In Circles, and it was absolutely amazing. It works really well with his mature singing voice.

I love listening to SDRE and just paying attention to how they changed over their career. It's fascinating comparing Diary to Rising Tide...

Brilliant! I love SDRE!
First saw them in 1994 at that club under the viaduct in Seattle. (Can't remember the name, it's closed down now. It where they filmed part of Singles, when Matt Dillon and Pearl Jam are sitting in a coffee shop.)

Saw Jeremy Enigk solo, but with a ten person orchestra, at the King Cat theatre in Seattle in 1996. gorgeous show, he played all the Return of the Frog Queen songs.

Then saw SDRE reformed at the Moore Theatre in 1998. So Good!

Last show was JE again solo, a couple of years (2005?) back at Nuemos on Cap Hill.

Looking forward to another show!

deadsanta 2009-04-22 12:49:06 PM
They weren't bad back in the day, but a band that broke up after one OK album doesn't merit the hype, especially given that they helped birth one of the worst bastard genres of music, ever.

Uncle_Slacker 2009-04-22 03:22:03 PM
Whatever happened with that JAWBREAKER reuinion, huh?

AceBusby 2009-04-22 06:51:22 PM
Anything that makes the Foo Fighters take a break and free up Chris for a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes tour is fine in my book.

/hates emo and real emo.
