trip-hop being soooooo 1998

So what is the new new thing? What revolutionary new sound is the latest and greatest? Hannah Montana?

cerote: I welcome new Massive Attack music. I'm still not over trip-hop.

So much this. It's not my absolute favorite for critical listening, but clearly my go-to genre for background music while working, surfing, etc. The only bad thing I can say about Massive Attack is that they inspired a decade's worth of assholes with soft synths and sequencers to release horrible, horrible tripe. But hey, it had the BPM and some languid chick vocalist to be called 'trip-hop,' right? Meh.

Anyway, I love Massive Attack. Blue Lnes, Mezzanine, and Protection are incredible.

100th Window wasn't great, but still decently listenable. At least it didn't make me want to cut myself with a rusty crucifix like Third did. I suppose I'll cough up the RIAA danegeld for this one, too.

I can't help but be cautious in today's musical environment. Even projects with the best of intentions fall prey to becoming clusterfarks.

Still, I've been working a lot of trip-hop into my mp3 shuffle lately. More Portishead than anything but also some Massive Attack, Tricky, etc. So, I'll cross my fingers and hope the new stuff doesn't leave me stabby.

/Limewire "preview" is a lifesaver.
//Yeah, I still buy if the album is worth a damn. Go away.

Tron Lafontaine 2009-04-21 06:04:51 AM
Not sure if it counts, but War Stories is a damn good album.

Everydayiblasphorme 2009-04-21 07:51:56 AM
I still consider Mezzanine the best album that I've ever listened to. It flows together so well.

Third was brilliant, the first Portishead album I ever liked. Each to their own, I guess.

Lots of loose talk in this thread for a band that's probably helped all of us get laid at some point or another.

I agree. Mezzanine / DJ Shadow's Entroducing are still in my regular rotation.

DrRatchet: So what is the new new thing? What revolutionary new sound is the latest and greatest? Hannah Montana?

Trip hop is still alive and kicking with all the regulars still producing and even more new producers dropping new tunes all the time. It just doesn't have the marketing push behind it like it did in the mid to late 90's.

As for the revolutionary new sounds, it's dubstep and dub techno which seem to be making the most waves right now. Well, dub techno is making ripples at least. Dubstep really, really kicks ass and isn't too far removed from trip hop.

NimbleWalrus 2009-04-21 09:07:51 AM
So they're only touring the UK? Lame.

Portishead's new album would like a word with you subby.

organizm: Portishead's new album would like a word with you subby.

I wouldn't say that Third is very Trip-hop. if anything, it's probably removed the Hip-Hop element almost completely from the equation.

I liked Third, but I'm puzzled at the near universal acclaim for the album. It sounded like a band very consciously trying not to retread their past sound.

/more looking forward to new MA. Especially if Hope Sandoval does appear on the album as rumored.

If you're looking for an intelligent conversation about music, please notice that I ended my previous post with the word "pooping."

That is all.

/though after a nearly 10 year hiatus, I'd argue that the style of the album isn't a forced changed (I would have never thought of that), and just the result of the band members being apart for so long. Hey, either way. I think the end result works.
//poop.

Triphop was the best thing to happen in music since 1976.

So excited for this, especially since Daddy G is back in the band too and everything they played on tour of the new stuff sounded amazing and almost like a proper follow-up to Mezzanine.

Saw them front row at the 930 club in DC in '98. Hope they make it back to the US too.

When they said new album they meant new album. Most of those songs are being thrown out and they're starting over.

Same here. Until House, I'd never even heard of them myself, and I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable when it comes to music(no brag, just fact; as Dizzy Dean once said).

while "revolutionary" might be a tad strong, i do agree that dubstep is the latest greatest thing over the past couple years. i'm lucky to live in a very small town with a very active music scene which includes some kickass dubstep djs. talk about getting a party moving...

Plus, some people can do this:
Enjoy (pops like the front of your pants will)

Glitchwerks 2009-04-22 01:05:57 PM
Teddy Hopper: while "revolutionary" might be a tad strong

Perhaps "revolutionary" is too strong a word, but it's awesome to hear a good DJ mixing dubstep, as he's usually throwing in a ton of disparate tracks from other genres as well. Dubstep mixes with IDM, techno, house, industrial, and anything else you can throw in there. I've heard Coil and Autechre both seemly mixed in with Skull Disco, and it's not supposed to work that way!

It's just nice to see people breaking from the neat little molds of "progressive polka disco breaks"...

Teddy Hopper 2009-04-22 01:31:01 PM
Yeah our guys are big on dubstep with drum and bass. That really works for me. But they'll bring in people from all over the place that are across the spectrum of electronica. some better than others, but its cool that they are making it happen for our little scene here.

Good to see you still here - I've been away from the series of tubes for a few months. Not suprisingly my productivity at work has been spectacular.

John Nash: F*ck those assholes, they can lick my balls.

so a few years back they played the paramount here in seattle. i'm an old wild bunch/massive attack fan from long long ago, but haven't really cared that much for anything beyond the first two albums, so i was sitting this one out... figured it'd be way expensive. and then they showed up in my record store, 3d, daddy g, horace andy, a few of their hired musicians... and hung out, spent a couple hundred bucks on vinyl, chatted, acted totally lovely.

and the kicker, they put us all on the guest list. when all was said and done, they put 24 guest spots for us, our friends and girlfriends. for reals. we walked down to the paramount, expecting it to be total smoke up our asses, but tix were waiting for all of us at will call. we even had a few extra, which i gave to a couple of the people with the "need tickets" signs.

the show was fantastic, mostly older stuff. oh, and liz frazier was there. yeah. liz. it was a great show, sounded awesome. yeah, i missed shara nelson, but the girl they had covering her parts did great.

so... no idea where the "assholes" comment is coming from. they hooked me up like family, and they even bought records!

boogerwolf 2009-04-22 02:26:05 PM
Mezzanine puts me in my dark place. I have a movie playing in my head whenever I listen to it. I need to seek help.

Seriously, it is one of those albums that just flows. It is one of the few I can listen to end-to-end. I don't care for every track on it but it flows so well that continuous listening is cool.
