Gunny Highway

look up the following Bauhaus videos on youtube:

"Bela Legosi's dead" [not the live version.... the studio version, preferrably from orig. vinyl]
their covers of "Ziggy Stardust" [video, not Rockpalast]
and "Telegram Sam".

/anybody else thinks he kinds of looks like a short haired Iggy Pop [with makeup on] a bit in "telegram sam" and "ziggy stardust" ?

whoa, depending on what you like, love & rockets could be better. start w/ bauhaus' in the flat field. i was a skater/punkmusicfan and loved bauhaus in high school. in the flat field is the only one that i still listen to more than once a year.
yeah, it is great

"How is Bauhaus?"

Depends on what you like. I like Bauhaus far more than Love & Rockets, but your mileage may vary. Bauhaus (especially the very early stuff) is a very dark, very creepy band. Go look up "In The Flat Field", "Bela Lugosi's Dead" or "Stigmata Martyr" on YouTube, & it'll give you a good idea of what the early stuff sounded like.

The album "In The Flat Field" is a classic.

Bauhaus is one of my favorite bands, actually. Some of Murphy's solo work is very good, too.

One of my favorite bits of rock trivia - and I still have the poster I swiped from the original Record Bar in Chapel Hill.

Thanks for the tip on the video!

And interestingly, their song "Go" is featured prominently in a Mercury car ad campaign. The album Tones on Tail cut is really good, though, and I still listen to it quite a bit. I was a HUGE Bauhaus/L&R/Peter Murphy fan growing up and still listen to a good bit of all of them. I really don't have a problem with this. They've all got to be pushing fifty, now, so if Murphy can cash a check crooning someone else's song in a commercial, it's fine by me. I do think it's funny when I hear kids who think it's their birthright to get music free off the internet biatch about a singer doing something that has a guaranteed paycheck.

Jesus built my hybrid 2009-04-21 09:40:12 AM
I actually think the song is appropriate, but only because I believe Karma is going to catch up with all of the big banks for raping the taxpayer.

Wells Fargo charged me $7 to cash one of their own checks yesterday then they tried to talk me into opening an accout with them. I just said why would I open an account with you when you rip off the customers of your clients. If I write a check to someone I want to know that they are not going to get hit with a huge fee by my bank when they try to cash it.

Eh, Tones on Tail is okay. Some good stuff, but I don't really listen to their stuff often.

Pyynk: ///L&R is hit or miss for me.

I would say Express is probably their most consistent album. Everything else sounds like a compilation of songs rather than a whole piece of work.

Bauhaus is still one of my favorite bands ever, but I think it's a "had to be there" sort of thing. I don't know if people who haven't heard them until 2009 will quite get it, but you never know. Give it a shot.

I still love him. I don't care if he has done commercials.

Love and Rockets is COMPLETELY AWESOME. Check out "7th Dream of Teenage Heaven" or somthing, i forget the title atm.

And although some will say/complain that "Earth Sun Moon" is a "sell out" record, it's also full of win -- it has the track "no new tale to tell" on it.

I dig mostly early LR, it gets less interesting, to me, the more 'electronic' they get, such as on "Lift." If you're into eletronic/dub, though, you should check it out. I am into that stuff, but that's not what made me like LR.

Enjoy your "new" music

With the way the economy is going on right now, they should've just chosen Peter Murphy's song "Cuts You Up"

ArturoBandini 2009-04-21 02:35:17 PM
Is it me, or has no one commented on the irony of using "Instant Karma" in this ad? Instant Karma's gonna get you? Join the human race? Isn't that the type of advice the banks should be heeding right now?

As for Bauhaus v. Love & Rockets? I dunno, it's kind of like, say, Stones v. Beatles. Do you like your music poppy or darker? I was always more of a Bauhaus man back in the day, but I don't really listen to either band much anymore.

"Strange Kind of Love"? To this day, whenever I listen to that song, I think it sounds like Peter Murphy channeling Neil Diamond.

Taima [TotalFark] 2009-04-21 03:14:45 PM
Dang, you'd never know that was Peter Murphy. An interesting choice of song title for a bank commercial tho.

"Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven" is the correct title.
Also be sure to listen to "Haunted When the Minutes Drag" which is topical because Trent and Peter do a quasi-cover of it in that "Reptile" video linked somewhere upthread.
