Sounds like EMI is trying to grab that cash with both hands and make a stash. Pink Floyd however seems to be saying, "Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie."

Seems like everyone is ditching and/or suing EMI lately, which is a good thing.

Terra Firma bought EMI in May 2007, and in early 2008 CEO Guy Hands told Rolling Stone he would overhaul the company by cutting costs, consolidating departments and courting corporate sponsors to put their brand on specific artists' music.

Lets see, one of the biggest bands in the world, with a spectacular stage and light show, and they use 2 pictures: The Australian Pink Floyd Show tribute band and former Floyd Roger Water's pig. I take it there are no pictures of PF floating around.

Kali-Yuga: Seems like everyone is ditching and/or suing EMI lately, which is a good thing.

The Beatles sued EMI over the same thing in about 1995.

Their suit was just settled a year or two ago,

The record companies intentionally underreport royalties to their artists, as the auditing process it set up in their favor and only really big acts (Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd) have he money to support a protracted legal battle.

Given that EMI is quickly going down the tubes, it's been suggested that certain major artist are trying to sue them into bankruptcy, as it would give them the chance to reacquire the ownership of their masters and other IP.

EMI has to be trusted by the people that they lie to. So that when they turn their backs on them, they'll have the chance to put the knife in. Guitar solo 1.

They've definitely lost Paul McCartney (After 45 years), Radiohead and The Rolling Stones since being bought out. But hey, they still have Ringo! lol

But because they still own the Beatles and Pink Floyd catalogs, they're still bring in cash (everyone you mentioned owned their own masters, which meant that when they left, they took the albums they recorded there with them).

Floyd is not prog rock. If you are looking for prog rock, you shouldn't be listening to Floyd.

They are classic rock/psychedelic rock(or were.) They never should have been classed as prog.

And they don't suck. They have at least four albums that are brilliant and the others all have flashes of greatness on them.

To each their own, of course.

To each their own, obviously the hoi polloi prefer their Nickleback's and Jonas Brothers' over anything showing any sort of musical substance.

By all means let's just keep using those same tired old song structures, rhythms and pentatonic scales ad infinitum.

I want to hear that same old I-IV-V progression over and over again!

Why is this the stock response to any attack on anyone's musical tastes on Fark?

Just because I disagree with you and don't think that the sound of Keith Emerson humping his B-3 is the most ethereal noise man has ever made doesn't doesn't mean I like Nickelback, you gomless twit.

this is why everyone hates prog rock. I think most are indifferent to the music, but good farking god, is there a group of fanboys more obnoxious than a Prog Rock fan? (Okay, maybe Juggaloes, but still...)

I'm fully convinced that the love for prog is for completely cosmetic reasons. Why else is the only excuse for liking Prog is because of time signatures, technical skill, etc? Not to mention few supposedly Progressive acts are actually progressive. I'd say King Crimson is one of the few prog-Rock acts that is actually progressive. Both KC and Pink Floyd are/were actually breaking musical ground. Most of the others were just wanking over complexity so D&D have a masturbation soundtrack.

Speaking of royalties, My roomate listens to conservative talk radio for entartainment, and one time I was riding with him in his car and as promised, it was hilarious. But one thing that struck me was that the conservatives used Pink Floyd's Money during one of their episodes. I don't think that the Floyd would allow that, thus me bringing up royalties, I wonder if they know.

Radio is allowed to play whatever it wants, so long as they pay royalties.

There's also some rule that allows you to use a short clip of a song without having to ask permission, again, so long as you pay royalties.

Of course, the irony of "Money" is that it's about as anti-materialist, anti-capitalist a song as you're going to get this side of Billy Bragg and John Lennon.

Not only that, but the bass riff from Peace Sells by Megadeth was used by MTV for the intro to MTV news for years and they never paid anything for it because it was only a 4 second sample.

What a silly statement. Did I say silly? I meant stupid. Either a brilliant troll (in which case, I bit) or an amazingly poor understanding of what prog rock is.

Just for fun though, I'll ask this: why are people scared of musicians who can play? Presence of technicality doesn't imply that you have no soul or emotion in your music. Just the opposite applies as well; just because you music is simple, doesn't make it more emotional or "nuanced" than complex playing, which is always unconditionally wanking. Skill and technique is just a tool to be able to express your thoughts on your given instrument. Playing the guitar is like speaking any language; you learn scales or expand your vocabulary, but syntax is just as important as using an expansive vocabulary. You can't just use technicality as a crutch, you have to explore your instrument and never just regurgitate complex playing for the sake of being complex.

Some people don't feel like sifting through complex music and I get that. Some would rather be comforted by music that they know and they can just lay back and chill, or tap their foot to the beat. I like that too, but sometimes I like to listen to something that requires me to pay more attention. I enjoy it for different reasons, that's all. No music genre entirely sucks and in every genre, 90% or more of the artists are crap.

/I'm rambling, ranting and raving
