Marines are "infernal machines." And damned for it.

Wow...the charge really is an "infernal machine." A GIS for infernal machine turns up tons of hits for an Indiana Jones game.

Davis said TSA was "actively investigating" why the gun and explosive materials were not detected during the screening in Las Vegas.

They were too busy looking for casino chips to cash in, nice pocket knives, and cameras and other attractive electronics to steal. Jeez - you can't expect them to do everything, guys.

When I came home for thanksgiving in 2001 I had a box cutter in my luggage, because I had been doing trade shows and had it in my bag. I didn't notice until I flew home to NH and BACK to faking Jacksonville.

Bonus: I flew into and out of Logan.

However they are all (well I didn't check grenade fuses) legal if declared and packed properly. It seems they were packed properly as they didn't get up and shoot someone, so it seems to be a paperwork problem.

If TSA is so blind as to miss them perhaps he had done the proper paperwork and they missed that too.

One correction: federal courts have ruled that the propellant in model rocket engines is not an "explosive", and attempts by Homeland Security to classify it as such were overreaching their authority.

Most of it, at least. And it even said his weapon was in a locked container.

TSA is biatching about some goddamn missing paperwork. Oh, and the fact they missed all of it during screening, which makes them look like the incompetent assholes they are. So they have to try to make an example out of the poor bastard. Even if he is a Marine.

SwiftFox: One correction: federal courts have ruled that the propellant in model rocket engines is not an "explosive", and attempts by Homeland Security to classify it as such were overreaching their authority.

Oh but the intervening story is totally Fark:

The BATF had categorized ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP) propellant used in all model rocketry as "explosives", basically making the entire field of model rocketry impossible.

Faced with increasing political pressure and bad press, the BATF set out to do their own "research" to prove that a model rocket could bring down an airliner.

They tried to get a major mfg to sell them "the big stuff" for a project. Once they found out the intent of the project was to smear their entire field, the answer was "go fark yourself". Which kinda proves you can't simply go online and anonymously buy the kind of super-hardware they wanted. They got a FARKING COURT ORDER to force the company to sell it to them. They did not procure an expert consultant to help them handle their material.

OK, so with no qualified handlers on staff, they head out with a load of rockets in a van to shoot a video proving a model rocket could down a jetliner. Apparently they wanted to demo first that you could fire it out of a van and quietly leave the area. First thing they do is try to SHOOT THE ROCKET OUT OF THE VAN CONTAINING ALL THE OTHER ROCKETS, LOOSE IN THE VAN.

Yep. They ignited their magazine and BURNED DOWN THEIR OWN VAN. Which, notably, never exploded.

And the whole premise of their plan was absurd. The speed and guidance systems needed to connect with a jetliner with a few pounds of payload is a very significant weapons system, and amateur model rockets are far, far away from this level of capability.

I flew from Killeen, through Houston and on to El Paso, with a box of 20 .243 rifle cartridges in my carry-on bag. TSA never found them. It was inadvertent, I almost crapped my pants when I found them in my bag as I was unpacking. I put them in my check baggage for the return trip, and never heard a word about it. OH, But Wait!
They made me dump my terrorist coffee from the Starbuck's that you could see from the TSA checkpoint. They wanded me when the foil from a package of cough drops set off the metal detector. For the record, at that point I was trying to see what I could get away with.

Oh, yeah, they found my toothpaste and shaving cream, which were obviously a danger to the other passengers until they were placed in the TSA approved Ziploc bag. Then they were safe, and the soccermoms could fly in peace.

FARK TSA. FARK THEM IN EVERY ORIFICE OF THEIR BODY.

"a locked handgun box containing a semi-automatic handgun, a fully loaded gun magazine"

Ok this is just a pathetic display of desperate fear mongering. OOOooooo the magazine was FULLY LOADED!1![death and destruction]!! If anything, it would be safer to have ammunition secured in a magazine (probably also in the locked gun case, though it would have been counter-productive to their spin to mention that) than rattling around loose in a bag.

Assuming the magazines were also locked inside the firearms container, he's following TSA guidelines (ignoring the fact that he didn't declare the firearm when he checked his bag at Vegas - a big no-go). From their website:

- You must securely pack any ammunition in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging that is specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.
- You can't use firearm magazines/clips for packing ammunition unless they completely and securely enclose the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard).
- You may carry the ammunition in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as you pack it as described above.

Here's what I wanna know... how the hell is this guy charged with possession of a concealed weapon in the secure area of an airport? If the firearm was in his checked bag, he was not in possession of it, at least not while he was in a secure area. Does this mean that if I fly out of Logan and check a firearm, I can be charged as well, even if I declare it to the airline as required by FAA regulation, since I'm sure state law in Mass doesn't mention declaring it to the airline?

One: Vegas TSA blew it and we're all not safe even with the rules in place because we're only as good as the people in charge of keeping us safe.

Two: No matter how many laws we put in place to keep us safe on an airplane, someone is going to be able to get dangerous materials on the plane with us. It's just a risk we'll have to take and stop limiting our freedoms with overwrought TSA rules.

Either we buckle down and go crazier about whatever happened here to make sure it "never happens again". We start asking about guns in checked baggage directly and making people take lie detectors before getting on the plane (along with taking our shoes off, unpacking all of our carry-on luggage, pour out our non-water liquids, and randomly being patted down) OR we maintain some of the regulations that can prevent the biggest problems (like no live grenade triggers, please!) but go back to sanity by keeping ourselves dressed and putting shampoo and toothpaste back in our carry-on bags.

This isn't the first huge failure at preventing a bomblike bag or test bomb through security (it's not even the second, third, or fourth...). Maybe if they spent less money and time trying to stop the next shoe bomb and focused on the seriously dangerous packages, then they'd have a better chance at not missing the forest through the trees. You have to imagine that if someone were actually *trying* to hide their terrorist act, it shouldn't be too hard to get it by these people *anyways*...so why add the extra hour of hassle if it's not mattering anyways?

True, true. Although it was kind of cool to be on the same range detail as my J and kill hats, and outshoot both of them. Especially since their voices were still blown out from DI duty and I gave them shiat for the entire week...

Another fine screw-up by the TSA where in real-life, you don't get second chances.

Why isn't the TSA held accountable for things like this? $6 billion of our tax dollars go to this joke of an agency, and they still can't find stuff like this, nearly a decade after 9/11.
