What a great find to start the morning. Thanks, subby.

If I wasn't already a diehard appreciator of Mr. Thompson, I'd be a convert after that. Into my favorites folder that performance most certainly went.

Well I'll be. This got dropped into my redlights list last night. I'm glad it was reconsidered (and I hope a few people get to enjoy something new to them).

Huge RT fan here. Nice to see Thompson getting some attention for a change. Nobody can play the guitar like Richard Thompson. And he writes a mean song, too. Some of the people I know are put off by his uniquely British vocal style, but I dig it.

There's only one Richard Thompson.

A little off topic, but I was lucky enough to see Bruce Cockburn over the weekend, and if you ever get the opportunity, I highly recommend it. Just him with an acoustic guitar, but that's all he needed. The guy's a great artist. I think if he and Thompson were to ever do a project together, it would be epic.

I would bazooka the queue to be first in line.

Richard Thompson is one of my faves of all time. What an amazing artist. I saw him once do a song called Rotten In Denmark (I think that's the title) about Hamlet. It was full of great lines like, "Better get a muzzle if you've got a great Dane"... anyway I have looked and looked and can not find that song anywhere. If anyone has any idea where that can be found I would so greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

"Dog Eat Dog (Hamlet)"
by Richard Thompson

This is the story of Hamlet
William Shakespeare's most notable play
A magnificent, dignified work of art
But to you morons I think I better tell it this way

Hamlet was the prince of a spot called Denmark
Never was such a frantic guy before or since
He was a dream boy but like a hole in the head
Denmark needed that prince

Oh, he chopped up his uncle just for marrying his mother
Drove his girl to suicide
Stabbed his baby brother
All because he felt nobody but himself should live
He was what you might call uncooperative

Hamlet had a girlfriend called Ophelia,
A cool put together chick that made men thrill
But Hamlet he thought she was from Uglyville
So he bumped off her father just to teach the girl a lesson
Cut him up in slices like a pound of delicatessen
Murder was one thing Hamlet sure did enjoy
He was what you might call quite a mischievous boy

It was dog eat dog eat dog in Denmark
Dog eat dog eat dog in Denmark
Dog eat dog eat dog in Denmark

Ophelia overcome with such grief and sorrow,
She popped her cork, she flipped her lid, she jumped the track,
Her intelligent mind developed a permanent crack.
Ophelia had a six and a half foot brother,
He thought Hamlet'd been a little too impolite,
So at the end of act five he challenged him to a fight, what a night!

It was dog eat dog eat dog in Denmark
Dog eat dog eat dog in Denmark
Dog eat dog eat dog in Denmark

And the moral of the story is very plain,
Better get a muzzle if you've got a Great Dane,
And the name of this omelet is Hamlet

That is some seriously biting guitar tone... excellent for conveying the sentiment of betrayal. I have a heavy-bodied Tele with that kind of edge and brightness, but I've never been so brash as to set up my amp to make it cut like that. Only in the Drive-By Truckers have I heard that type of lead set-up live.

I've not listened to Richard Thompson before, but I can definitely see myself doing it again. Thanks, Subby.

RT is tops as a guitar player and lyricist. Seeing RT live is highly recommended. Great music whether it be solo with an acoustic guitar or with his band and an electric guitar. Plus you get his awesome between song banter. Banter on par with Tom Waits.

"Pick a window, you're leavin'." Wish I could remember the story he was telling, but that line has stuck with me for years now. Anyway, yes, his dry, self-deprecating humor is just icing on the cake.

Saw him with a band only one time (solo 2-3X) -- quite a treat. Dave Mattacks on drums (masterfully understated), Danny Thompson on upright bass all night, Pete Zorn, I believe, utility player, and Richard. On "Shoot Out The Lights" Richard was wailing away on electric guitar (great contrast against the acoustic bass) and Pete Zorn was doing slides on his microphone stand, which would be a bit cliched, except he was doing it with a mandolin.

Highly recommend everyone go see RT at his Montalvo shows every December, just an awesome guy!
See his website for lots of useful info.

I also agree with Pat Metheney.

/have seen him at least a dozen times
//as played out as '52VBL is, it is still awesome to watch him play

So what you're saying is, if you had a rocket launcher, some son of a biatch would die?

I saw him only once on the Mountain Stage radio show where he did 2 sets of 3 songs. After watching this I immediately went to his website and checked his tour dates. Nope, nowhere near me. Valerie has to be my favorite song of his, beating '52 Vincent by a nose.

Unfortunately, never saw him on electric, just acoustic.
As incredible an electric guitarist he is, he is even more
fantastic just by himself on acoustic, he has no peers when it comes
to acoustic guitar.
Acoustic!
Going to see Jeff Beck this week in Oakland

Nice refcatch. And it was purely unintentional to boot.

For any of you who, like factoryconnection and PerfectlyCromulent, are new to Richard, here's a decent little primer on him: Solitary Life (this is Pt. 1). Also, the DVD for "Grizzly Man" includes a fairly lengthy additional documentary of him working on the soundtrack with Werner Herzog and Henry Kaiser.

Oops, I'd hate to forget this one.

I love RT, he's an amazing songwriter, just amazing. Saw him 13 years ago (jeez I'm old) at the Caravan of Dreams in Ft Worth. Wanted to go see him recently in Austin but both nights were sold out, darn it.

Blisteringly good.

Every Farker and Farkette should listen to him based only on the fact that Werner Herzog likes him!

No matter how many times I repeat the experience, I get great big god damned chills every time I witness 1952 Vincent Black Lightning live.

Dang, I never heard that song before. That was incredible. Any MORE gems from RT that I don't know about?
