(London Times) Obvious Pete Townshend on Quadrophenia: "I am afraid that the front row of the first performance will be Mods wearing parkas. Even if they were young, it would be pretty awful. If they are in their sixties it could be worse"   (entertainment.timesonline.co.uk) divider line 34

I had pretty good seats for Quadrophenia when I saw it in 1973.

I would very much like to have seen The Who live prior to, say, '78. Just to pick an arbitrary date.

The greatest self-fellating egofest ever produced?

I can't wait to see it.

No matter how this turns out I will always consider Quadrophenia to be the greatest album by the greatest band of all time.

I dunno. Who's Next is pretty damn good, too. Townsend is one of the two musicians (Zappa being the other) who doesn't bore me when he talks. I like the e-mail interview format in TFA. It gave Pete a chance to stretch out and think about what he was going to say - and then say it well. Good link.

why bother, its over, they had a better run than most bands, but this'll just be a sad, lengthy denoument for a once respected artist
/listens to the who
//goes to local shows
///better crowd, more insanity

Quadrophenia? What's his take on Pedophilia?

I Love Quadrophenia as well.

One thing I never got and thought was rather weird, was that when Keith died [alcohol and/or drug related], 1979, Pete blamed himself because he didn't watch out for it, didn't 'save' Keith in time.... then he proceeded to wallow in sorrow and self pity while consuming large amounts of drugs and alcohol for a few years in the early 80's.
if you just saw your friend and drummer slowly F*** himself up and eventually kill himself [albeit accidentally] with drugs and alcohol why would you take the same path, do the exact same thing he did? what good would that do, at all??
btw, didn't Pete have drug problems in the early 70's as well? maybe he just has/had an 'addictive personality'?

Frostus
you lucky lucky bastard.
i heard that some shows were plagued with problems [ie. tape problems, timing, etc. etc. very elaborate stuff...]
how was yours? did they play all of Quad plus some older stuff?

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-04-20 11:55:30 AM
from tfa
But what I recall was that it was not my intention that the personalities of each band member were meant to be part of Jimmy. Each band member was supposed to perform an aspect of each of Jimmy's four personality extremes. This is a crucial difference.

hmmm interesting.
always heard the former, never the latter.

same here. I saw them play it in '96 at Madison Square Garden and bought the DVD of the UK performance. It was almost a play as each part was sung by different people but the video would have been better with the "real" Jimmy like the NY show had

After seeing a Who tribute show last week when the band played all of Quadrophenia, my interest in the album has been rekindled. Mostly lately i have been listening to pre-Tommy Who. Pure Genius.

What confused me is how at 60 something years old, John Entwistle made the decision to take a fist full of coke and act like a fool, after seeing his friends and contemporaries die from acts of similar excess for the past 35 years. THAT is just stupid.

Bill_Wick's_Friend 2009-04-20 03:15:20 PM
There's supposed to be an uncertainty about whether or not Jimmy dies?

Guess I've been misinterpreting that movie for 20+ years. I always just assumed that the empty bike crashing over the cliff was a combination of cheesy cinematic symbolism as well as a way of saving money by not needing a stuntman to fly off into space.

Jimmy dies. Han shoots first.

yup.
what confused me was that Pete and the rest just went straight on with the tour they were on. No 'days off' for in memorandum type stuff.

It was a great show but I had to go look up the setlist online because the specific details are just a wee bit fuzzy. If you go to this site and search for the show at the Montreal Forum (Dec 2, 1973) you'll see the setlist. My favorite memory from the show was Townsend taking his guitar off at one point and pretending it was a hockey stick. He looked up at the crowd, smiled and yelled "It sounds like a bleeding hockey stadium in here!" Well, that and getting to see one of my drum heroes play live. Moon was a wild man. I also saw Bonham play up there on the Physical Graffiti tour.

Not stupid . . . just the most natural way for a rock star to go. Bloodstream full of coke, stripper in his bed. John wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

It was self-fellating. It was and egofest. It was one of, if not the greatest rock compostions of all time. And I would have given my left nut to see it performed musically by The Who in toto. I will make a special trip to London to see it in a theater production if there are no plans to take it across the pond.

What part of my statement did you find confusing?

I was at a birthday party recently for an ex mod who had turned 50, it was great to see all these older guys still into their music and lifestyle and none were wearing parkas, they looked a lot better than most other 50 y/o's

First scene of the movie shows Jimmy walking away from the cliff. He jumped before the bike went over

They are too young to have been amongst the Mods portrayed in Quadrophenia. That was set in around 1964.

Brilliance personified. Thanks for everything, Pete! I mean everything. I can't get the "Benefit for Maryville" CD out of my player. Not too mention the endless times I revisit my The Who albums. I'm thinking about going "completest" on this artist. Very few names that come to mind I would do so for.

LOVE!!!! (drums)
