fark Yeah. My Submission made it!

Last night I saw Kreator/Exodus play (Belphegor and Warbringer opened), and it was farking awesome!

Ok, on to this weeks recs:

Aspid - Extravasation: Russian thrash metal. These guys are really quite awesome. They got fast, heavy riffs, with complex, technical solos. This is all accompanied by a standard sounding thrash vocalist singing in Russian, which I find amusing for some reason.

Saint Vitus - Born Too Late: Traditional doom from America, St. Vitus never quite got the attention they deserved, despite being one of the first doom metal bands, having formed in the early 70's. They play slow and heavy, with a large Black Sabbath and Pentagram influence.

And of course, I can't go without mentioning a black metal band.

Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom: Black/Death mix from Canada. Blasphemy plays pure unrelenting, muddy-sounding brutality. satanicsantoku, these guys might appeal to you.

it's a classic.

I liked them better while Karen Carpenter still sang for them.

FINALLY. I've been waiting for SHMHC today- mostly because I need to know someone in Boston who wants to go to some metal shows. I'm going to Gojira in Worcester, AILD/LOG in Boston and Mastadon in Boston. My brother in DC will usually make the trip but he's only coming to Gojira. Anyone local? Email is my handle at yahoo.

/desperate much? sheesh.
//great tune, btw

good call. btw, thanks for the Negura Bunget recommendation last week. I'm now hooked.

for my contribution this week, I give you Suidakra - A Vision's Demise (pops)

I know this band has been linked before, but the solo in this song absolutely rips.

Been listening to this band nonstop for a week or so now. Can't wait for their new album in July:

What a sensational band. Their album N' Crugu Bradlui (didn't even copy paste it!) was such a shining light in metal when it was released. Them and Drudkh kept my metal faith going, especially as black metal is concerned.

I posted that back a few weeks ago when Kliffoth and Satanicsantoku were arguing about grindcore to illustrate that black metal and grind are easily mockable.

Is it time to post random metal links yet?

Devin Townsend - Ziltoidia Attaxx!!! (new window) Devin Townsend is amazing.

Obscura - Anticosmic Overload (new window) Similar to Necrophagist, but a little heavier on the prog.

Oceano - District Of Misery (new window) I still don't like the word "deathcore" but I enjoy this band.

Daath - The Worthless(new window) Takes a little while to get going, but a good song anyways.

I'm just happy that the HOB opened here near Fenway. I'm so sick of going to Worcester for metal shows (although it seems as that is likely to continue). I have seen some good stuff there- the Jager fest or wtf it was called was great last year with BTBAM, August Burns Red, Black Dahlia Murder (who were dressed up as Scooby and the gang), Emmure, 3 Inches of Blood, etc. etc.

Just missed the NE Metal and Hardcore fest. Would have really liked to have seen some of those bands... Austrian Death Machine,The Haunted and After the Burial being a few.

/passed on seeing Amon Amarth just because it was in Worcester.

Those Swallow the Sun links lead me to this one:

Draconian - Seasons Apart (new window)

which will be the SHMHC album download for this week. Similar sound, but with both operatic female and death metal vocals.

I wish metal videos would go back to this sort of low-budget filming...seriously. It adds to the "purity," if you will, of the whole musical experience. Love it...as cheesy as it may seem.

Some good links this week. I particularly liked the Aspid, Augury, Obscura and Swallow the Sun. My offerings this week:

Sieges Even - Apocalyptic Disposition: tech German thrash from 1988. With the inimitable Franz Herde on vocals.

Blotted Science - Synaptic Plasticity: tech instrumental metal supergroup

Odious Mortem - Collapse Of Recreation: tech death metal; best song on the album. Ron J's guest solo is amazing.

Sorry about the late arrival to SHMHC (been traveling all day), but I LOVE that video. I've seen it countless times and every time it cracks me up. I think it was someone on Fark that hooked it up to the Benny Hillifier, or maybe it was just on YouTube like that, but it is awesome.

Here are some recs for the week:

Enslaved - Path to Vanir (new window) - Another somewhat funny Metal video from the Viking/Progressive Metal gods. I'm not sure if I've recommended Enslaved before, but their catalog is very diverse. Some people hate certain Enslaved albums but love other ones.

Allvater - Valhalla (new window) - Melodic Black/Viking from Germany. Kick ass harsh vocals.

Falchion - Mayhem Machine
(new window) - A few people I know don't like this Folk Metal band from Finland because the Ensiferum/Jari worship is so obvious. I happen to think they do a good job and their sophomore album "Chronicles of the Dead" is a bit better than their 2005 album "Legacy of Heathens".

I actually don't know that much about doom, as it's a subgenere that I only recently started to explore. I'm not really familiar with Isole's work, but it sounds pretty good.

Of the Doom bands that I do know, here are some of my favorites:

Solitude Aeturnus - Mirror of Sorrow (new window)

Esoteric - Order of Destiny (new window)

Reverend Bizarre - Doom Over This World (new window)

loser_death_spiral 2009-04-19 08:57:52 PM
Just FYI. All of Esoteric's back catalog is available to download/listen to from their website. The only one that I really like is Metamorphogenesis.

Yes, love Daylight Dies. Don't have any Saturnus...the Itunes Music Store has "Veronica Decides to Die," "For the Loveless Lonely Nights," and "Paradise Belongs to You." Are any of those better than the others?

Have you heard Insomnium?

Paradise Belongs To You
is far and away their best album. Veronika Decides Is Die is also good, although not near Paradise. I have not heard their third album.

Insmnium I have heard of, but never actually heard. Pretty good, although to me it sounded closer to melodic death than doom.

did someone say doom?

Grief - I Hate The Human Race
Graves At Sea - Cirrhosis
Rwake - Crooked Rivers (Live)
November's Doom - The Pale Haunt Departure
Old Man Gloom - Gift
Coffins - Destiny To Suffering

i love doom and sludge. for those nitpicking, doom tends to be really, really slow and more atonal while sludge has some more punk-tempo breaks and tends to borrow some southern-rock style riffage. love that shiat.
