Meh, pay for what you take, then you can complain if they come after you.

They're undercover. The NFL does the same thing to scout draft picks, posing as hot girls. It's like Roger Goodell's version of perverted justice.

Something similar happened to a girl in NJ. A collections agent was looking for her car, found her myspace, realized she was keeping her car at college, and repo'd it from her dorm's parking lot.

Collection agencies are scum.

Last year I hit a batch of financial trouble after getting laid off of a job that I had for less than five months (got nothing from it). Told the people who had the note on my car to take the car back. They sent me a letter telling me that I still owed them $4k. I said "suck it." Got a call a bit later from a collection agency who bought the debt. I told them "I'm not paying you. You basically bought an I.O.U. from the people I owed money to, and now you think that I owe you money, even though I never asked you to pay you money and we have no contract. You took my debt without me asking you to, you eat the money. I owe you nothing."

She was driving it. And while that shouldn't matter because it's her father's responsibility, debt collectors have been known to say and use far, far more outrageous tactics. And I'm loving the trend of people being caught via too much rope.

Too bad you do owe them. Odds are the contract you signed when you bought the car gave them the right to sell the note and did not exclude residual balances after liquidation of the collateral.

The transferring of debt makes me very uneasy. Unless the actual company is bought out, but just selling debts to a third party should not be legal imo.

I personally hope the collection agency gets ass raped by the court. I got hounded by a collection agency because a company I worked for owed money. They stared calling me, my parents, my grandparents, and friends. I had nothing to do with the debt nor did I work there any more. The only thing I had to do with them was I had a corporate card when I worked there. They kept saying that I could be held liable for the debt. Then they sent a Sheriff's deputy to my house to serve me with court papers. I went to court and they threw it out. I hope those bastards farking die.

I'll just let the debt go unpaid until the law says that it's gone. State law even protects me from being sued for the unpaid balance. I have no problem letting a debt company buy a loan that I'm not going to pay at this point. No one forced them to buy it, and I really don't give a rats ass if they go out of business. As for the company that gave me the loan. It was $14k, I paid every month for 3 years, they sold the car for $7k, they made back their money plus some, so again, I don't care.

You do realize that at some level you are owe something you agreed to pay. It's not stealing, but it's in the same ballpark.

I'd like to see how you felt if your last employer fired you and didn't pay you the last 4K they owed you. They were bought by another company and that company had no contact with you, they owe you nothing.

Just so you know, you are legally obligated to pay that debt. If they are willing, they can sue you for the debt and the go about collecting in any manner of ways including garnishing wages or placing a lien on any property you might acquire in your lifetime.

Life happens and people fall behind, but to say "suck it" to your creditors on a debt you owe speaks poorly of you.

You should have sued. They racked up about $4000 in damages just from what you wrote, and I'm assuming they only called everyone once.

In this thread, deadbeats who won't pay their farking debts. Hey assholes, thanks for being part of the problem. If you take goods or services without paying what you agreed to pay with no intention of even attempting to pay, you're a thieving scumbag. I had a car repossessed once. I didn't blame the repo guys or the finance company, I blamed myself for getting involved with a cokehead. I also busted my ass in a shiathole ICU in St Petersburg for a week to pay what I owed and got my car back.

I get FIVE calls a day for someone named Janet. Apparently, I got her old phone number. No matter how many times I say they have the wrong number, she doesn't live here, she got a new number, I don't know her, it doesn't stop them from calling.

saeufer82 2009-04-19 09:27:58 PM
I love collection agencies. When I moved to Seattle, I kept getting collection calls for a dude named Vo who evidently used to have the phone number I got. You'd think that a reasonable person would understand that phone numbers are reassigned after 6-12 months, but no... "I'm sorry ma'am, no one here by that name." "Do you know where he is?" "I don't even know WHO he is, I just got this phone number." "Well if you don't tell us where he is....." "Never call this number again. (click)"

Anyone who drives a GL450 and can't pay for it is probably a tool, but I hope this guy OWNS them in court. Typical collection agency crap, threatening other people and accusing people of a crime that doesn't even exist. I love the case file "there is no such thing as a class 5 felony in Illinois."

The people at WaMu were surprised to hear that I was taking every penny of my savings out the week after they got taken over because I didn't do business with Chase...

earthworm2.0 2009-04-19 09:28:10 PM
I am on the fence about the debt thing. i read a story about a lady once who owed a debt to the IRS. she paid it off in 3 months, but the IRS came after her for like triple what the debt was after the fact for interest on documentation fees and what not.

And lets not forget what happened to Joe Louis.

If you bvuy a car and cant' pay for it, you should have to give it back, but paying interest on something you dont own anymore and and they resold at a profit, I just see that as an attempt to keep american people shackled with debt. I mean, your ability to feed your family depends on your ability to earn, and thier company is not at risk of faltering nearly as much as you.

I mean, when is the last time you heard abouta company living in a car somewhere, or oneof those tent comunities? I guess thats a bit liberal, but....Its kinda the same concept as organized religon- Jesus doesn't ahve a light bill to pay, doesn't need his car washed, isn't going hungry.

Federal law requires that they disclose who they work for only if you expressly ask. Find out, tell them if they call again, you will consider it harassment, then if they do again, contact a lawyer.

I hope its not a character, then in a few years when he thinks they have just stopped calling about the debt and he tries to get a new car or get a new house he all of a sudden realizes that that debt left on his credit report screws up his chance of ever getting a loan at a decent rate.

It'll be an education for you when your ass gets stiff on a debt for product or services. You'll find the "suck it" response less than humorous.

BTW, if I was your creditor and that was your response, I'd sure your ass and put a lien on anything you ever owned, and there would be nothing your POS state appointed attorney could do.
