Just the other day I looked out my window and saw some guy walking his dog. Of course, I'm not a professional observer, so I called the DHS to have this guy checked out in case he was a suicidal jihadist planning to fire-bomb the local middle school.

/Better safe than sorry.
//If you're not guilty, you have nothing to worry about.

Wow two stories like this in one day.

tonesskin [TotalFark] 2009-04-19 07:23:05 PM
If you see this as a "better safe than sorry" then you are an idiot. The woman apparently thought she saw a struggle (not sure why) and did exactly what she should have done. The police reacted quickly and everything turned out just fine. In fact, I feel pretty good that the police actually "solved" the case so quickly. shiat like this happens, and it sucks, but at least she reacted instead of saying, "Blah, not my business," or act like a cynical jackass.

Yeah let's call out a manhunt every time someone 'struggles' with their child.

Giggity! One of my clients was a 40 year old with a body of an 12 yr old.

If it wasn't for her face, I would've had a hard time guessing her age.

"North Port police showed up at the Price Boulevard home of Leonard Haslage, who operates a window and pool cleaning business with his 17-year-old daughter"

So..... a 17 year old girl who looks between the ages of 6 and 12 years old? Anyone else understand why eyewitness testimony is regard as anything but crap?

Who regards it as such? Certainly not juries and the courts. Maybe scientists and those who know better, but eyewitness memory is likely the MOST influential factor in any case. In many cases it is the ONLY evidence used for conviction.

Plus, it really isn't horrible. Most studies demonstrate approximately 75% accuracy on central details. It is bad enough that it should never be the exclusive piece of evidence used for conviction (especially capital convictions), but eyewitnesses are typically more accurate than inaccurate.

Many of the studies demonstrating low accuracy have very, very, very low ecological validity, as well.

Yup.

I'm suprised it's allowed into the court of law. It makes me wonder what kind of crap is pulled off if something unreliable as eyewitnesses are allowed.

I agree with you. The response was appropriate, and the followup after the facts were known was good. Contrast this to the Boston Lite Brite situation. The Weeners was appropriate, but everything after the facts were known was way out of proportion. Not to mention that no other city freaked out about the ATHF advertisements.

Oh, that reminds me...

If porn was produced of an 18 year old that looks like a 6-12 years old, is it considered CP or legal porn - even though ID records was kept?

Exactly. That was a case of completely irrational behavior.

Under current law, sort of, but I think it is under appeal. There was COPA, CPPA, and all kinds of other acts that kept getting struck down. They included shiat about cartoons, etc. Then they made a new law (I think it requires jurors to apply the Miller test and they can consider the "child-like" nature of the actors). That's the last I remember, but it may have been appealed through by now.

Should? WTF for?!

/ All media depiciting murder should be outlawed too! After all, it probably inspires murder.

// Does that reasoning make sense? Then why should it be applied to this case?

Um, actually, it was.

Sheriff's deputies set a staging area in a grocery store parking lot at State Road 776 and County Road 771. Detectives and dog, marine and aviation units began searching the area and running down leads.

Sounds like a manhunt to me. Actually, the article uses that exact word: "The large manhunt came after a woman reported what she thought was a child abduction in the Gulf Cove area at about 10:30 a.m."

As for the "every time someone struggles with their child" part, that's also what it ways: "She described a man in a red pickup with pool supplies in the back struggling with a girl between 6 and 12 years old."

There's plenty of this available. Most of the pr0n where they have the girl put their ID in front of the camera (with some convenient blurring) is there to show the viewer that they are legally enjoying sexual activities of a very young looking adult.

You got me. Clearly there was nothing else discussed, such as him driving off, etc. She just called police and said, "Hey, some guy was struggling with his child."

And the slippery slope thing is totally called for here, too.

Law enforcement should know to always ignore any calls about potential kidnappings, apparently.

According to the daughter and the father, there was nothing that was close to a "struggle". The problem was with the woman assuming it was an abduction. $10 says she spends a lot of time watching AMW, reruns of Dateline, and the Oxygen Channel.

As long as the caller doesn't have a history of calling in dogs for robbing banks and the like, they've got to react appropriately. I might think it was a bit overkill, but probably not too far considering the potential ramifications.

tonesskin: Untapped? Really?

I was going to say legally untapped as there's plenty of stuff floating around, but the legality might be suspect.

Then I realized that I forgot about Rule 34.

What is it about some males that they are afraid of any female, no matter how verifiably adult they are, that seems to be less than 30 years old, or doesn't have tits out to next week?

You really think they "mobilized everything?"

Okay, I was clearly off. The police should have sent two patrol cars to the scene to take a report--obviously they overreacted.

Hindsight bias ROCKS! The police only "overreacted" because the woman was wrong. If the guy really did kidnap some chick and kill her, people would talk about the incompetence of the cops and how they didn't use all of the tools at their disposal.
