Rabbit problem? Get yourself a few big, healthy eagles. Problem solved soon.

Would there be any objection if the campus and town were infested with snakes? Probably not. I love cute animals as much as the next guy (I especially love wabbits), but the logic of cute = worth saving is particularly frustrating.

Side note - rabbit is actually a delicious meal if prepared correctly. But again, people are hesitant to even try it. Anus and lip hot dogs? No problem! Rabbit? Ewww!

We have eagles. They can't keep up.

/not to mention eagles are scavengers.
//would have been better mentioning hawks.
///have those too, and they also can't keep up.

The university has come under pressure to cull the animals by angry neighbours but how that might be accomplished is fuelling a raging debate.

Why do people use the word "cull" when they mean kill? Are we culling Iraqis?

Man, we have the same problem here in Seal Beach. Millions of the little f*ckers breeding like, well, rabbits and feasting on the gardens, lawns, landscaping, etc. everywhere. The hawks, feral cats, coyotes, and possums don't even make a dent in their population.

Yet even breathe one word about "poison", "shooting" or "trapping" and fury and outrage sweeps the area. You might kill my kitty! (Does it look like a rabbit?) You might kill the kids! (Do they look like rabbits?) You might hurt the rabbits! (Isn't that the point?) Someone even suggested live-trapping the bunnies and releasing them someplace else. HOLY MOTHER OF KALI!

People have weird notions about furry cute animals.

Rabbits are not an endangered species, and this sounds like an effective way to solve the problem. All the "humane" solutions involve just moving the bunnies somewhere else, which is really just a transferrence of the problem.

I have no problem with this. I'm disgusted to even walk through the lawn around my apartment complex because you can't put your foot down without stepping on five pieces of rabbit shiat... and that's a conservative estimate!

Man, am I ever sick of the outrage that stems from our dominance over all other creatures on the face of the Earth.

My brother has the best Brown Sugar treatment for making Cottontail jerky. I took a batch to college in Alaska and my native roommate drove me nuts begging for a taste all the darn time. I grew up subsistence living, so rabbit was another way to add variety when we tired of fish and venison.

Craptastic: Just trap 'em and eat 'em.

Seriously. Set rabbit traps. Catch rabbits. Eat rabbits.

Or, if your sensitive, feed them to the homeless or something.

brantgoose 2009-04-19 05:10:47 PM
Bring in the 100 Milers!

Basically I'm saying the same thing as craptastic: kill 'em, skin 'em, eat 'em. It's nature's way of keeping down the rabbits.

If you don't kill them, they'll attract coyotes, foxes, wolves, bears, goats, stoats, moats, Croats, Krauts, louts, and rabbits. Especially rabbits.

Speaking of coyotes, is that explosive gas solution from the Acme catalog of pest control?

WHERE THE HECK ARE THE CADDY SHACK REFERENCES? Oh, wait. There's one. Ooooo! Frisky Dingo?

Man, a group of the dominate omnivores on this planet is being plagued by fuzzy hopping meat bags... whatever could we do.

I like the comment under the article about them not being raised for human consumption. Boy, we eat puffer fish, everything on this planet is for human consumption if we can figure out how to eat it. And if we can't, then it's a matter of time.

Epsilon: Rabbit problem? Get yourself a few big, healthy eagles. Problem solved soon.

Eagles? Try BEAGLES. There's nothing a population of rabbits can bring to the table that a pupulation of hunting dogs can't beat.

And if we go the falconry route, at least use a falcon. It's cheaper and more effective than an eagle, which is a honkin' big bird but more suited to water life.

I thought they just poured concrete into the burrows. On the one hand, it leads to the grisly death of the warren. On the other hand, it provides the impetus for a renegade band of rabbits to continue following the vision of one prescient runt to form their own warren, at the same time exploring complicated issues of life and death in a child-friendly format.

I don't really see why its necessary to kill the rabbits on the university's end. The point is that we really are always an unnecessarily ruthless and barbaric species. Think of this situation.

U of Vic Rabbit Population: 1500
Victoria Rabbit Population : 75000
Human : Rabbit Ratio - 50:1

Alright. Now then. The crimes of the rabbits.

Excessive breeding. The duggers are still on TLC, and they are by far, a much more worthy candidate of extermination than rabbits.

Pooping. Its rabbit shiat, what the hell is it going to do to you? It doesn't even smell like shiat, its vegetable pellets. Oh, and dogs love the shiat, and everyone pooperscoops dog shiat anyways so. Allow dog owners to let their dogs eat the shiat, and then they are duty bound to pick up their dog's steaming shiat, and they'll feel good about it the whole time. shiat conversion people, shiat conversion.

Eating People's Garden Plants. - Put up some fencing around your precious lillies.

All of that said, I farking love eating rabbit. They should open up rabbit hunting completely in Victoria, on one's own property. University students get to shoot the ones at the school. All rabbits must be eaten, an unstewed rabbit is a waste. Kill them for their flavour, not for their apparent crimes against humanity. People are such farking pussies...

Ummon 2009-04-19 05:26:59 PM
1) go to animal shelter
2) get a dozen or so of feral cats
3) Make small shelter for them
4) watch cats get fat

"Not surprisingly, animal rights advocates are not wild about that option, and university officials have said they plan to try non-lethal approaches first.

Local veterinarian Nick Shaw has offered to perform vasectomies on the rabbits, but he says even that won't solve all of the bunny problems."

So, because they're such big pussies they won't solve the problem, thousands more bunnies will be born and have to suffer? Aren't things like this a pretty good sign that the people in power aren't doing their job and should be replaced? (Maybe they'll all get promotions?)

I live about five minutes away from this place, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies...

In all seriousness though, the "environmentally conscious" students, and the SPCA, will never allow a mass cull of the rabbits on campus. As far as I know, it is actually legal to kill them, as they are vermin. Personally, I've always wanted to try rabbit, but the cost of farm raised rabbit in the grocery store is rather prohibitive. Unfortunately, one student, when interviewed by our local paper, stated that if they saw someone killing a rabbit, they would physically assault the person in question. Otherwise I would be tempted to go hunt for my dinner.

As far as the rodenator is concerned, I'm not convinced that it is the best solution for this problem. Not because I think it's inhumane, but rather, most of the rabbits on campus are accustomed to people, and have lost any inherent weariness. They generally don't dig extensive burrows. At most, they scoop out hundreds of tiny cavities around campus, which might not be compatible with the designed use of the device. OTOH, because the rabbits aren't intimidated by people, it would be quite easy to catch them by hand and kill them.

A related story... Several years ago, one of the area hospitals also had a problem rabbit population. It was swiftly decided that the rabbits posed a health risk, and needed to be dealt with. A marksman was hired, and the problem was dealt with over a period of several weeks. Interestingly, for a while, only black rabbits could be seen on the hospital grounds, as the shooting was done primarily at night.
