Actually, the bible says you can sell your daughter. So, maybe not.

/I find the father's actions abhorrent, but I don't think he's the only one to blame in this situation. It's not quite so black and white. Hollywood used her as much as the father is planning to do, then chucked her back where she came from without thought of the consequences of exposing her and her family to a different life. Add to that the severe poverty in India... ugh. Money and greed perverts a lot of people.

This. And here's a tidbit FTFA for the lazier among us:

Yeah, I missed that. But I couldn't imagine they didn't give her ANYTHING. That wasn't really my point. It's a problem when you haul someone out of their culture, out of poverty and expose them to the glamour of Hollywood briefly. But maybe this happens with a lot of parents to famous children. Taste of fame and money and then nothing is enough.

And I wasn't excusing the father. He's an SOB.

What's with the News Of The World's penchant for dressing up as sheiks? Every "undercover report" they do involves some guy doing a deal to buy something dressed as a middle-easterner.

The comments by the spokesperson from Save The Children went to the gist of the story: extreme poverty forces people to do whatever is necessary to survive. Selling children for cash is just one example.

That said, the father and uncle appear to be motivated by greed rather than survival. Whatever money was given to the kid has been spent for crap things like his cell phone.

He makes Octomom look like Parent of the Year.

Sumatra [TotalFark] 2009-04-19 08:34:44 AM
Ummm...people are bought and sold every day. Kids, women and men. I'd like to think they wouldn't sell her into a sexual slavery ring, and I doubt one would pay that much. Nor will she be a child soldier. Seems more like they're shooting for Madonna or Brangelina. Are people upset because they're asking too much? Because she was in a movie? This is almost like a missing white girl in America. She gets all the attention and outrage but the problems are far greater.

Farked_in_the_NW 2009-04-19 08:35:38 AM
To play the devils advocate... This family lives in destitution unknown to most who frequent these forums. $200k would get that entire family out of that situation and would prevent any other children from ending up in that shiat-hole part of India (presumably). I'm guessing that the person who fronts the $200k to buy the kid is more of a bleeding heart because, quite frankly, you don't need to spend that much money to screw with a kid (not that I would know, but the a-holes that I see charged with molestation on the local news certainly couldn't afford that, and I presume that a rich pedo-bear wouldn't spend that much money to diddle a 9 yo anyway).

elidet 2009-04-19 08:37:14 AM
I hope she gets adopted by a loving family and grows up to be successful and her dad suffers a long, slow and painful death.

mcwebe0 [TotalFark] 2009-04-19 09:25:10 AM
Freda de Stiletto

You have identified one of the problems with economic injustice or, more accurately, with simplistic attempts to resolve it. Giving a quantity of money to someone of which they have no conception means you are also giving them an amount of money they don't know how to manage. That is why so many lottery winners become Fark favorites. This is also why simply giving people cash as reparations for slavery will not fundamentaly change the system.

In this family's situation, they lived in extreme poverty and received a large quantity of money which everyone knew they had. Who knows what happened next, but in a relatively collectivist culture, family members may have showed up "needing help" (that almost doesn't need the quotes) and the father may have felt obligated to help. That is speculation, but it is the sort of thing that happens when you give someone resources dispropotionate to their normal situation.

A bit rich for my blood. How much for, say, a Golden Globe winner? Or just an Oscar nominee?

It's sad, but so is the poverty that would make one even consider such a thing.

I don't really get the outrage. The end result of this, assuming that the father uses the money to get the rest of the family out of the slums, is that all of them will be better off.

tiamet4 2009-04-19 10:06:44 AM
The father sounds like a real prize, but honestly I wish him luck. If he gets his price, she'll get away from him and probably on to a better life (I can't imagine anyone would spend that kind of money for a slave) and maybe her family will also see some benefit if Dad doesn't fritter it all away.

Education isn't the same ticket out of poverty that it is in the Western World. Hell, did you ever read about those follow-ups of the rich guy who offers to pay for the college education of a class of poor students? Less than 1/2 graduate HS, let alone go to college. Paid for tuition is nothing.

What about her brothers and sisters? How about rent? Food? Clothing? All that stuff costs money. What good is paid for schooling if she's hungry at class?

T.Durden 2009-04-19 11:11:03 AM
Why would the Christian society be so upset over a story like this? The Bible says it's okay:

You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46)

It's in the same place that the outraged Christians find the proof they need to persecute homosexuals:

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Leviticus 18:22)

Can't be outraged by one and accept the other, can they? I've never known a Christian to be hypocritical...

guerrillero de fark 2009-04-19 11:18:25 AM
This is a daily occurence in India. The only newsworthy item is the asking price, which would set up most impoverished Indians for life. That being said the father doesnt seem to be the financially responsible type.
