From the article:

"It's a psychological problem in any case. Arresting people and putting them in jail isn't going to change anything," he added.

It's only been 20 years or so since homosexuality was seen as a psychological problem, so they're perhaps not as far behind the enlightened USA as you might believe.

Also, you might want to speak to a few gay people in the US to see what it's like. I'm not sure many people get beaten up in the streets or abused at work for being straight.

I remember reading an article about Iraq pre-invasion, particularly about Christian Iraqis pre-invasion. They were allowed to have beauty parlors, and to sell alcohol, and I believe Saddam even let Easter services be broadcast on TV. Granted, it still kind of sucked for them - lots of Iraqi Christians immigrated to my hometown even before 2003. I had a interesting conversation with one woman whose family fled Saddam about why she supported McCain.

Anyhow, after the invasion, anyone who gave haircuts or sold alcohol either closed up shop or had constant threats, some of which were fulfilled.

So, yeah, I'd say this is some kind of progress.

Some kind of.

StreetlightInTheGhetto 2009-04-19 06:33:57 AM
By the way, "kind of" means different things to me when I'm kind of tipsy. "kind of sucked" = really freaking sucked for some of the families, especially if they had money. "kind of progress" = well, it's something, but, um, not the greatest and not all of it is progress...

Or we could have a president who never admits fault, ever, alienating allies and emboldening enemies in the process.

If you think apologizing for wrongdoing makes you a wimp... well, that's not a sign of maturity.

We didn't even like giving refugee status to Iraqis who helped out American troops, as translators and the like, even as their lives and the lives of their family were threatened.

I would kind of agree with that, but if we can't even protect the folks who risk their lives to help us out (granted, for a paycheck, but still, under the constant real threat for their lives)... well, we really need to catch up, that's all.

No, it's from the 7-parts mini-series 'Generation Kill'.

You must be thinking of Afghanistan. Most Iraqi men have short hair and are clean shaven (mustaches are almost obligitory). Also, getting alcohol has never, I repeat never, been a problem in Iraq. Most of the drivers at checkpoints that gave us problems were drunk off their asses.

One of our translators and his brother live in Knoxville, Tennessee. Own a house and everything. Some of the translators couldn't get the kind of background check that is required to send them to our country. There's a reason for that. Some of those same translators are sitting in prison because they were working for the bad guys.

It is a long way from Sodom and Gomorrah, but perhaps part way back to the old Baghdad. The Baathists who ruled here from the 1960s until the American invasion in 2003 were secular, and more than a little sinful.

Some idiot who will inevitably say this while smoking a pipe and looking smug: Well, you know, under Saddam Hussein, women actually had more rights than anywhere else in the Middle-East.

Nice talking point, but that's not actually true. Yes, while the Baathist reforms regarding women's rights were indeed advanced compared to most of the Middle-East, the fact is that the 1956 Tunisian reforms of civil rights, along with Turkey's 1926 civil code and the Iranian Shah's family laws went further.

The Baathist reforms took an even worse slid back when, in order to appeal to the fundamentalist, Saddam actually legalized honor killings, something which is still a (slight) offense in the vast majority of the Middle-East and punishable under law (though sometimes/often ignored depending on the countries).

/in other news, it's good to see that life in Baghdad is getting better.
