This really brings me back.

I have listened to this song (in the day of course) countless times and never seen this video.

Didn't know it was a makeout song until now.

Love the "Goo" videos...

And by "rock out," we of course mean, "create a galactic vortex of suck."

ok, ok... "Daydream nation" is probably their best, but my personal vote always went to GOO... Very good from start to finish... the follow up "Dirty" was really good too... I will confess to not having heard the last 3 or 4 albums, however

When was Sonic Youth ever a wall of noise?

electronicmaji: When was Sonic Youth ever a wall of noise?

you're farking kidding right?

check out their early stuff, before they got popular. they didn't even know how to play and would just experiment with noise.

also, while I understand the importance of Sonic Youth to music progression in the 1990's, I can't say I was ever or am a fan. too mellow? I dunno, just doesn't strike an out of tune chord with me.

The very early albums tested the limits of my patience

Wall of noise or not they have put out some great stuff over the years.

Goo is a very good album, but Sister and Daydream Nation are my favorite SY albums.

Which brings me to this, old folks singing "Schizophrenia" (from Young at Heart):

For future reference, the following bands are examples of walls of noise (wall noise, or walls for short, thanks; all links to youtube):

Werewolf Jerusalem - live at No Fun Fest 2008
The Rita - "The Engine as Fuzz Pedal: The vintage dirt bike engine and the classic fuzz effect. A live study through audio articulation."
Vomir - live at Optimus Prime II

The hell? I'll never trust an old person again

Oh, aren't you a person of discriminating taste.
Look, Sonic Youth's not for everyone, I understand their appeal is limited.
But maybe you should find a thread about a band you like instead of just being a dick.

God, I've not seen that in years!

/seeing the short clip on Beavis and Butt-head doesn't count.

I agree with mome23, SY isn't for everyone... just like any other thing that anyone can like or have an opinion about... there's always going to be someone who doesn't like something for some reason... it's all in how they go about expressing it.

SY rules :)

I vaguely remember going to the record store and buying Bleach the day after I saw that video on 120 Minutes, because the Nirvana shirt was featured so prominently. Good times.

Yeh, SY did a lot to boost Nirvana prior to Nevermind coming out.
Whatever else you wanna say about them, they've been pretty consistent about supporting indie bands.
I remember the first interview I ever read with them when Daydream Nation came out, Thurston made a point saying how Dinosaur Jr.'s Bug was better than their new record. He was wrong, of course, but it was a classy gesture.

Never heard Sunno))). But next month I'm heading out to get Pelican and ISIS to melt the fillings out of my teeth.

I somehow ended up with a Sonic Youth album a couple of years ago called Washing Machine(I think?) I like it, real chill. Lots of dissonance.

ArturoBandini 2009-04-19 07:20:21 PM
BTW, guys, it's Sunn O))) not "Sunno" - and IIRC, it's pronounced just "sun." The O))) is just from the amp logo they swiped for their name.

I like them, although it's definitely an "every once and awhile" kind of thing for me. It's not all the time that I want to feel like my face is being peeled away by waves of sludgy bass.

I just picked up a Boris album - admittedly for the Bryter Layter cover parody. I've only listened to a little of it, but I like what I'm hearing so far.

Do you really think I am unaware of Sunn amps? (Traynor,Acoustic,Sound City et al....)

The required space in the moniker SUNN + O))) is of marginal consequence.

SUNNO)))

.....SUNN O)))

whatever,thanks though.

I don't know you from Adam, Mr. Sensitive. You might not even know how to farking tie your shoes for all I know.

Just being helpful, so interested listeners aren't asking clerks or searching around for "Sunno."

You can resume thinking that everyone else gives a shiat about you now.

CaptainFatass 2009-04-19 09:49:18 PM
Haha, I remember working at a pizza place in the 80s, and putting a cassette of Bad Moon Rising on to keep myself entertained.

Quoth a coworker: "I think your tape player is broken..."

Yeah, SOnic Youth isn't for everyone, but they've always had a pop sensibility about them, you just had to listen for it.

You know, a lot of the first Nada Surf album sounds pretty much exactly like this song. Yum.

See "Theoretical Girls"

Sorry trooper, you may be the spas on this one.

The sole purpose of my transmission was to express how I am aware of the logo on my amps AND the name of a band that is a tribute to said amp.(really a tribute to EARTH "Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars")

I appreciate that you just wanted to simplify for possible google searches for those who don't already know.

Now calm down.
