Critics say the "Star Trek" series have improved over the years. The special effects have grown better with each of the five series and the acting is not so overdone as that of the original cast.

I dunno, Kirk was overdone, and McCoy always looked like he was about to eat you, but overall it wasn't so bad. If you want overacting check out early episodes with Troi.

Oh Great - a Sci-Fi bashing thread.

Myopic morons whose view of the future are colored by a specific entertainment concepts.

Odd thing - These sci-fi concepts require imagination and a open mind and yet these fans cannot allow other shows to be just as valid.

It's tantamount to reading only novels from a specific author despite the near-infinite number of books in the library.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is still the gold standard in my mind. It had the least amount of internal inconsistency, stuck to sensible rules (like the captain staying on the ship, the XO doing most of the footwork, characters having specialties that they, for the most part, kept to), had villains who remained consistent (unlike the lobotomization they gave the Borg in Voyager) and had decent special effects, especially into the 3rd season and beyond. Oh, and their technology didn't dramatically and drastically change in the course of the seven years they were on TV, and when it did change some there were some ramifications to that.

The Stargate universe had massive tech changes like the space faring ships without massive societal upheaval that didn't make a lot of sense, Babylon 5 suffered from a producer and creator who both couldn't make up his mind and couldn't keep the studios from jacking it around, Farscape was too Muppety for my taste when it came out, Andromeda had special effects that were amateurish and silly (and I had difficulty believing Kevin Sorbo in that role), and Earth: Final Conflict didn't have acting quite up to where I felt that it should have been; it felt a little forced. Star Trek: Deep Space 9 was okay, but it suffered both from being the wicked step child of Paramount due to its syndicated nature and from consistency issues once the whole Dominion thing got wrote in. Star Trek: Voyager had a captain who was also the engineer, warrior, diplomat, physicist, patron of the arts, food critic, pilot, and handball champion to the point that it didn't seem like the rest of the crew had any reason to be there, who also could outwit the Borg of all races. Firefly was strong out of the gate but got cut so fast that we didn't really get to see what would have happened in the long term. Finally, Battlestar Galactica ended very, very oddly. Not horribly, but just ... odd.

I like most of these series, but I'm not above acknowledging their faults. I watched a fair bit of Andromeda and Earth: Final Conflict, and they were decent enough to be entertaining. I even enjoyed SeaQuest: DSV back in the day, though I drew the line a Knight Rider: 2020.

i hear the sci-fi geeks and their whining...but are any of you ready to push for full disclosure?

no.

i didn't think so.

the future is already here...and you're missing it.

-our world has no fraking credibility.

fark 'sci-fi', right up its do-nothing ass.

dreamers and do-nothings...the lot of you.

grow up...and quit being part of the problem.

you're playing right into their hands.

-you think the government is going to just open up and admit anything?

you do their jobs for them.

you must push and fight for full disclosure.

it is not your "right".

quit being so damned nice.

-i farking hate stargate...and almost all other "sci-fi"...dune, being the exception.

the commonality of man, indeed.

Nebula-class, although there were two versions. One, with the dorsal platform having two connected fins, the other with only one. Although both served to house the primary torpedo launcher.

I guess it's just easier to go back to the past with Star Trek, so who's gonna get the blame for it when this one bites the big one? Give us the post-Voyager universe!
Oh, please! Not another redo of the first series, it's got doom written all over it!

TOS is an okay show. I'm watching the first season right now for the first time evar. I was raised on TNG. TOS is okay, but it's a lot less believable technically.

Like the huge complaint about TNG is that, because it came out in the '80s, it's too touchy feely. And I get that. But TOS feels like a military show written by some yuppie in a cardigan. I'm watching "Mudd's Women" this very minute. Kirk just suggested putting a forcefield around Mudd's ship to protect him from the asteroids. Scotty was like, "we can't do it! it'll overload our own engines!" Kirk just fuggin does anyway. I get that he's taking a calculated risk and he's all gung ho, but uh. Don't you want a smidge more detail on overloading the engines? I feel like on TNG, Picard would have said something like, "how long could we hold it before the engines blow?" Then Geordi would be like, "five minutes tops captain, take a look, it's in a book!" and THEN with the calculated risk.

Also, I realize how nerdy it is for me to post this long comment about star trek, but if you really think you're less nerdy than I am, perhaps you should be doing something other than playing on the Internet on a saturday afternoon?

I couldn't help but notice that there were no clips of "Starship Farragut" included in that article. Take a look at http://www.starshipfarragut.com/Episodes.php (new window) to see why.

High production values and great sets hampered by very bad writing and even worse acting.

Wait, I'm completely confused. Were the clips that ABQD posted links to actually finished products? Those were godawful! And what do you mean high production values? It looked like it was shot with a Sony Handicam from the 90's, and the makeup was worse than the last high school production I had to sit through. Are you people actually going to watch this series?
