Par for the course for those vultures.

At the memorial in Atlanta (NOT the US Park Service one),
the gift shop was bigger than the museum. Seriously.

Judge them not by the color of their skin
but by the contents of their wallets.

Something can be legal and asinine at the same time.

Not only that, but Martin Luther King Jr. would never approve of using somebody else' words.

I might be terribly wrong, but I'm not sure you can own a quote given in a speech in a public place, so long as it's always attributed correctly.

They should hire the RIAA and MPAA lawyers.

Seemed to work for the Swedish.

FTFA: In the 1990s, the family reached settlements with USA Today and CBS over their use of King's "I Have a Dream" speech without permission. A federal appeals court ruled in 1999 during the CBS case that the speech was not in the public domain.

It just blows my mind that anyone could own the rights to a public speech given by the leader of a major political movement. How does that make sense?

xmasbaby [TotalFark] 2009-04-18 03:47:27 PM
Wait until they find out about all those high school students using that speech at graduation. They can easily get $20 each from those kids.

Personally, I would have gone for the "sad" tag. I'm sure lining the pockets of MLK's grandkids was exactly what the folks who donated to build the monument had in mind.

I think the family gets a bit "sphincterish" at times, but let's face it, they have a right to at least share in the profits being made on MLK.

And there are profits, alot of them, being made by various organizations, and entrepreneurs.

If the King family doesn't actively and aggressively protect their rights to MLK's name, likeness, and works, they will lose them, and the rights to any money being made as well.

Just my opinion, but if anyone is going to profit from MLK, it should be the family, first and foremost.

What's so bad about charging a licensing fee? The republicans tell me that shameless profiteering is what makes our nation great.

My coworkers got to witness a drive-by the next block over from the one in Pontiac, MI.

I was totally safe, though. One block in the other direction.

Damn, I hate it when generalities and stereotypes turn out to be almost completely accurate.

Share in profits off books, gifts Sure.. Gain profits from someone trying to raise money to build a national monument honoring their own father?

Negative..

Considering Obama's stand on taxing of earnings over 500,000 per year, hopefully very very much will go to the IRS...

How is it that the children own the copyright on a public speech given 40+ years ago by a dead person? Did he in fact copyright his speech at the time?

Actually, it's the ability to freely use your own talents to provide service and products that others want and need that you seem to think is shameless profiteering.
