And it's why when "fag" is considered off limits in the class room words like "queer" or "homo" get substituted, instead of something else that references lack of masculinity.

If the term "fag" were truly divorced from homosexuality, that scene wouldn't be ironic or funny. It would just be a random moment of a guy being abusive to someone he slept with.

So you're saying the kids not understanding it when they're using it means it has nothing to do with gay people, or no effect?

Where are the kids getting the word from? And, what does it imply to the kids who are on the receiving end of the word? It is not neutral. And it is not non-homophobic, especially to the kids on the receiving end of it.

What you're saying is the same defence as people who use a slur out of ignorance. They don't know what they're doing, so there's no effect, right? They didn't know the implication of calling a Muslim guy "terrorist" or an Asian "chink". But to the person who gets called a slur, and the other people around who hear the slur, there's definitely an effect. The ignorance of the person using these words and the intent they individually have is only a small part of the picture that reinforces the homophobia, or racism, associated with the slur.
