One of the handful of Rush songs I like ... and even so, I skip past the BS most of the time to get to the good parts.

First rock song I ever learned on bass. It is fairly simple, as Rush songs go.

Nope. Sorry. In college we used this for bathroom breaks, lunch, getting baked, and then reading through Rolling Stone. Then we'd have a few minutes to queue up something else.

Although born in '75, I grew up with Alice's Restaurant. I'm somewhat irritated that the 2000 version is.... not nearly as good, even if the new joke in it was pretty cute...

You don't have to like it.

Hell, you can hate it.

God damn, I love that song.

I wish they performed this on their Snakes and Arrows tour.
Embarrassingly, I fell asleep at the Snakes and Arrows show in Vancouver. I can't remember why, but I was super exhausted about three quarters of the way through the show, and kept nodding off until the guy with the Starman tattoo elbowed me awake.

nice vid. I have the three disc box set [exit, grace, hands].
I wished I had waited, because about 5 months after I bought it, I saw them for sale SEPERATELY at a music store. In that case, I just would've bough "Exit..." and "Grace....", because I dislike "a show of hands". [i dislike the cd, and i haven't watched the dvd].
oh well... a box set for $30 was a good deal at the time...

anyway:
in before the lists:
T-U-E's top Rush albums [that he owns]:
1. Moving Pictures
2. Hemispheres
3. A Farewell to Kings
4. Signals
5. Grace Under Pressure
6. All the World's A Stage
7. 2112
8. Caress of Steel
9. Permanent Waves
10. Rush
11. Vapour Trails

I don't think I've ever listened to that whole song. They could easily have just split the damn thing up into 3 songs, but noooo, can't have that, can we.

The Amazing Mumford 2009-04-18 03:42:01 PM
One of the few times Geddy actually plays guitar. Granted it's only for about 30 seconds at the end but cool none the less.

I would listen to this on my walkman on the bus for away games during high school football. The kids listening to Trixter and Firehouse thought it was lame but I guess it stood the test of time a little bit better.

Us new kids used the NOFX rock opera bit.... or my favorite for bathroom/food/baked is Dream Theater's 'Change of Seasons'. 25 minutes plus...

This song also works well when you demand to not get ripped off from overpriced jukeboxes. That and 2112 unless they break up the tracks.

91.7 KSVR FM in MV!

Do you hear different than others? None of it is really close to Sweet Child.

This is an awesome concert, Exit . . . Stage Left. It came to DVD a few years ago with A Show of Hands and Grace Under Pressure tour.

Xanadu starts right after The Trees.

Oh and before they start on Xanadu there's a quick snippet of Neil Peart talking on the video and some other commentary from band members.

Slash has said he ripped off Sweet Child o' Mine's opening riff from Xanadu.

What's this "go to their vans" crap?

You got baked right there in the studio and then the engineer would give you shiat about it if he caught you, but if he wasn't a total douche you'd at least do him the courtesy of stashing the smoking materials in a discreet hallway nook from then on.

Not being the smoking type (and also being a PD at the time), I'd bring a bottle of wine and hide it in the newsroom where nobody looked, if I was stuck doing the overnight shift because some part-timer spaced off their shift because they couldn't manage the slight bit of delayed gratification involved in waiting until during their shift to get baked.

Good times.

During Friday afternoon RUSH hour traffic, my work to home drive is exactly 1 Xanadu long.
The rest of the week, it's 1 La Villa Strangiato.

craigdamage 2009-04-18 10:36:11 PM
Just as corny, overblown and pretentious as hell as I remember it.
(formula for typical dumb Rush song):

intro
riff part a
riff part b
riff part c
First change(fast and complex)
Second change (even more tricky)
Tempo change
back to first tempo
back to riff a and b
Cheesy and embarrassing lyrics
Another change
more riffs
Another tempo change (clever and tricky time signature change)
more bad lyrics
First part reprise
....more changes,parts,tempos.....etc....etc....

Lame.
Come up with a good riff.
Drive it home with a good steady groove.
All else is masturbatory.

....goddamn,"Farewell to Kings" is an awesome sounding record.

Nice to see Rush playing before Neil became such a sour puss, with that constant I'd-rather-be-somewhere-else look on his face.

Do you play guitar, and do you know how to play these two songs? The riffs are very similar.

It sounds like you're looking for AC/DC, but this is a Rush thread. How exactly is Rush to blame for your stupidity again?

The key and some of the notes are the same, but the meter (time signiture) is different.

I doubt that, and your opinion of "Xanadu" and all their other long songs confirm that. Since when has Rush ever made it their trademark to "Come up with a good riff (and) drive it home with a good steady groove"? Only a tiny handful of their songs are like that, so the rest of their material must be, in your words, "masturbatory". So, you're not a fan. How many times you've seen them and how long ago is irrelevant, but I'll clue you into the fact that I'm not under 35 myself.

Don't want to be insulted? Don't proffer blatantly dumb, contrarian opinions. It's ok not to like "Xanadu" and its ilk, taste being subjective and all. But that's not what you said, so blame yourself for being opened up to attack.
