This reminds me of when I bought a mansion at a distress sale with my girlfriend. The place ended up being a disaster -- the stairs collapsed, the plumbing was full of junk, and there was even a raccoon in the dumbwaiter. Our contractors were complete idiots -- they always promised something would be done in two weeks, but it never was. In the end my girl had to ask her ex husband for more money to sink into this project, and I became distrustful of her relationship with him. Our relationship became intensely hostile, and we decided to sell the house and split the money when it was done. However, later I had a change of heart and we reconciled, and even got married in front of the house.

"As she surveyed the water damage in the store she has owned for 20 years, Pham said the wedding dress she had made for a customer had been ruined, adding that she would "make another one and not tell her."

Now there's the american sense of ethics at work. It's nice to see cultural integration is going so well..

Is the world ready for another romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, and Owen Wilson? We say: Yes.

As someone who works with three unrelated Nguyens, I'm getting a kick out of this headline.

zephyrkate 2009-04-18 05:00:52 PM
I went to high school with a girl whose name was pretty much pronounced "When-When When." The last name was Nguyen, but her first name was spelled (I think) Wen-Wen. Over the intercom, she was invariably "Ween-Ween Gooin" which once sent my entire history class into sophomoric giggles (was going to use alliteration, but saw the filter would get me).

I work with a woman with the first name Uyen. Got married to a Nguyen but, for good reason, goes by her maiden name. That's only two "Wens" though, so you out-wen'd me.

How is this special just because they're Vietnamese? I lived in a house in college where you could literally see through the cracks in the doors and windows, out-farking-side. When do I get my own sob-story article?

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2009-04-18 06:23:24 PM
They just need some crusty bitter ex-soldier to get fed up with the whole mess and hire a pussy-whipped Viet teenager to earn his manhood while cleaning up the street. The old man could earn the respect of his neighbors by firing off his old Army carbine once in a while.

It's fairly phonetic, except the 'ye' is an 'i'-ish sound.

The 'ng' at the beginning of the name is NOT silent. It is a sound that we do have in English, except it is never at the beginning of a word. Think of the suffix '-ing' except without the 'i'; you make the sound at the back of the throat. In the International Phonetic Alphabet the sound is called "engma". It is very soft and, to many English speakers, simply sounds silent when it is at the beginning of a word; that's why we just pronounce the u first. I suspect that many Vietnamese speakers simply trample over the 'ng' sound anyway, the way English speakers sometimes fail to articulate awkward consonant combinations.

Having a weird ethnic name can be handy - if some random caller murders it badly enough, odds are it's a telemarketer. Call it advance warning.

Huh? She's not going to tell the purchaser that she worked twice as hard as she expected on the dress. That's actually the way it should be. She's taking her losses, re-doing the dress, and keeping her mouth shut about how much extra work was involved. Admirable.

An "real" American would try to get more money from the customer (either by raising the price or by telling a sob story about all the extra work) while also suing the landlord for everything he owns. Unfortunate, but true.

My Vietnamese coworker says it was because of a change in the ruling family. Everyone who had a last name like or sounding like the previous rulers quickly changed to Nguyen to avoid trouble. She and her husband had the same last name even before they married, but they're completely unrelated and from two majorly different sections of the country. Ha.

So? Don't live in freakin Chinatown if you want better living conditions. What is this rocket science? Geezus.
