Come on. I've known since the 80s that 5 or six targets is far easier to defend against than hundreds. Nuclear strategy FAIL.

What a foolish and whimsical article even by Pravda's low standards.

Well, they are apparently well armored against flamewars, so conventional ballistics probably wouldn't work.

From TFA: "The third nuclear strike will be made against Freddie Mac and Dannie Mae. "These two agencies currently devour a great amount of state funds," Inga Foksha said."

Would anyone really be opposed to the Russians nuking Freddie and Fannie?

You'd think their plan would be "At all costs, avoid hitting Freddy and Dannie."

That's the stupidest thing I've ever read.

You don't drop NUCLEAR weapons hoping to do financial damage. YOu nuke someone you're looking for catastrophic human and infrastructure damage.

Trust me...Russia could drop a nuke in the middle of Montana and kill 2 cows and our markets would tank before we retailiated and the world ended.

You want to cause major financial damage? Drop a big EMP in NY during trading. The sheer panic of impulsive idiots will cause our markets to hit 40 in no time.

RageAgainstTheMachine 2009-04-18 09:46:28 AM
Because if nuclear war breaks out between Russia and the U.S., we're each only going to launch somewhere between 5 and 12 nuclear weapons...

A few EMP's would do more damage than any direct strike at any target could hope to cause.

You know Fannie and freddie don't actually make the home loans to people.

We've been explaining for months now, if you don't understand it then it's because you choose not to.

FTFA: Economist Yevgeny Nadorshin believes that any of such subjects are insane. "The difference between the moment when they paralyze the nation's economy and the moment when it comes to our lives, is measured in hours. No matter what kind of targets they might choose, a nuclear blow will not pass unnoticed. I am against this concept, I believe that it is nonsense," the expert told Bigness.ru.

Once the nukes start flying, it's going to be the real deal - no one is going to stop until the only thing left of the US and Russia is radioactive dust.

Uhm... why?

Love the point about having to hit only 5 targets. Er... you might want to think about the response you'd get after taking out those five targets.

We successfully vaporized all five targets, comrades! Now... what to do about those 1100 inbound ICBMs...?

You don't even a nuke to wipe out America's money, you just need to knock a few "symbolic" buildings down, then follow up a few weeks later with some pranks, like mailing anthrax, so people fear attacks are continuing, and then when panic reaches critical mass, sit back for the next decade or two and watch America spend all its money on excessive internal security and huge wars against whomever's next on its shiat list.

That depends on how is running the show in the white house. Even UBL admitted that he needs only to send three guys and an al qaida flag to some northern region of iraq and the US will spend 50 million dollars trying to do something.

Hopefully today Obama will fedex a message back to UBL with the word "meh" in it.

Actually I'm advocating the destruction of an asshole company that holds 45K of my student debt. And considering I've been threatening to consume my math teacher to gain his power for the last month, if I get arrested for wanting an asshole student loan company to get what's coming to them, well, I'll be stunned.

FTFA: If it disappears, and if banks have no guarantees, the people will panic and will rush to cash their deposits," Foksha said.

Of COURSE!! Because lord knows in the event of a small scale nuclear exchange the first thing we will all be thinking of doing is securing our finances!

Bunkering up and getting home defenses ready? - Nope
Getting locked and loaded for the assault? - NOPE
Stockpiling food rations in case of a nuclear winter? - Nope

Oh Hey honey, quick lets make sure our 401k is secure, maybe pull out all our money in case need paper money to start small fires around the house with!

Everything within 30 miles is completely obliterated and turned to ash. Even rock. Resulting fireball is 110 miles across burning anything that wasn't immediately destroyed.

A single EMP could destroy almost every computer in Western Europe, or most of those in the US. The original poster was correct.

They supposedly got rid of those per a proliferation treaty. The one tested wasn't actually the maximum capability of that particular type - IIRC it was only 60 megaton compared to the possible maximum of 90; two warheads mounted on the same type of missile they use to send their cosmonauts into space.

But even a regular >10 megaton nuke hitting a city like New York would do far far more damage than any number of EMPs. An EMP would knock out people's technology, the financial industry might go into severe depression, there might possible be short term riots.

A nuke hits New York City, you get the same financial collapse, plus massive destruction of infrastructure, a whole area being rendered uninhabitable, millions dead, millions of refugees, some of them suffering from dangerous radioactive burns, many more from radiation exposure, and fallout rendering nearby areas like Boston unsafe.

Even if every city in the US was hit by an EMP, a single such strike would dwarf the it by magnitudes.
