I've seen the clips of Murrow totally owning McCarthy. I can only imagine how he'd own the teabaggers. Hell H.L. Mencken would have a field day with them, and he was a print guy. He was the one journalist that when Wilson implemented a censorship office openly defied the policy and basically dared the government to arrest him. Do I need to say he was never touched and never was a word of one of his pieces at the time altered?

Stay Cool Babylon 2009-04-17 05:55:57 PM
I'm just glad that this incident of bad journalism will be used to deflect any and all criticism of teabaggers and the apparently widespread misinformation amongst them.

"We're not stupid! It's your l-l-lib media!"

PS, your headline sucks, subby. "Reporterette" instantly discredits anything of value you might have to say.

WhyteRaven74: I've seen the clips of Murrow totally owning McCarthy. I can only imagine how he'd own the teabaggers.

I can't believe you're using this as an example. That's brainfreezingly stupid.

Murrow would certainly not treat an average citizen expressing his first amendment rights in a public place as he would a sitting US senator abusing his considerable legislative power in a clearly anti-constitutional way.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2009-04-17 06:14:44 PM
RocketRod: But he never would've made himself part of the story

He very much made himself part of the story when he went after McCarthy. He wasn't just talking about what McCarthy did, he took him directly to task for what he was doing.

Oh don't worry, Murrow would've gone after the people organizing the whole farce not the people actually out holding the signs. But not like he viewed jingoism very well.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2009-04-17 06:22:31 PM
generally speaking, it's a bad idea to go to a protest and taunt the protesters. They already showed up to the event being a tad irritable and it ain't smart to rile up 'em even more.

How are they poor peasants who should stick to making fries? Who said that?

How about this? Why wasn't the guy at the rally able to defend his picture of Obama looking like Hitler while calling him a fascist? The reporter asked him a simple question and he couldn't answer it. Nor could the guy with the baby.

No, actually they can stop making fries long enough to insist that the top earners in America need tax cuts. Then it's back to the fries.

If the fight is so worthwhile then couldn't they have used the time and energy to find and promote a solid republican candidate who would have won the election and be running things sensibly right now ?

Is that such an absurd idea ?

How many of the more sensible conservatives here were out there with misspelled signs chanting idiotic slogans ? Not many, I'm guessing. But now they are compelled to defend the team even though they're probably embarrassed by yet another crock of idiocy.

Yeah. Of course, she definitely did break proper decorum, and on principle I think journalists should be more thick-skinned, but damn... that avalanche of stupid would've been hard for anyone to deal with.

Ok, how about this. Instead of talking about the issues that were supposedly behind the protest, this thread will probably go to 1000+ responses with people arguing over this one reporter.

Yeah, great way to promote the conservative agenda. With winning ideas like this we'll see last year all over again.

These people never made it to the compare and contrast section of middle school. You have to take it slow and parse one idea at a time.

Hobodeluxe: the crowd treated her like the enemy before she even got started. you know how the Fox Fundies are. They deride everyone who isn't to the right of Mussolini.

I just rewatched the video- she was actually pretty nice and reasonable to the guy with Obama's face on Hitler's body. She really only started to lose it after that when the crowd supported him and started chanting other asinine crap as well.

I mean, she did lose her cool and was unprofessional- or less professional than she could have been- but what was she seriously supposed to say? I don't recall any journalist taking seriously liberals who compared Bush to Hitler. Why are we always expected to take every conservative argument like it's the word of God?

I mean, seriously, have we bitten off the tree of knowledge and angered him. Is that what you're telling us conservatives?

It is impossible for everyone in journalism to be biased (and "biased towards the truth" doesn't count). Still, this lady had a job to do and went after a guy holding a baby-pretty messed up.
