Don't forget the DHS boss who thinks the biggest threat to America is annoyed veterans.

A politician with links to the auto industry involved in a corruption sting related to pensions? Yeah, that's a schock.

I think the biggest threat to America are people who take things out of context and who make a point to not read.

OK, I know the NYT site is Fark-unfriendly, but their story is much more informative. Part of the bribe money went to finance a low-budget movie called Chooch. NY is starting to seem a lot like IL.

Starting to seem? New York teaches Illinois and New Jersey everything they know about corruption. The rest they used to learn by correspondence course from Louisiana until that stupid hurricane came along and peeled the roof off their tidy little arrangements down there.

If the guy is found guilty of being part of any of it, sure.

There's this word in the article that subby seemed to gloss over.

"Accused."

That word has a rather special meaning in our legal system.

Ummm. No. Obama's not deciding whether to send this guy to jail; he's deciding whether to keep him on in a position of public trust over a public investment that is, at best, highly controversial. There's a huge credibility component to this guy's job because he's got to sell the investment opportunity in a way that doesn't look like throwing good money after bad.

Yeah, but it doesn't apply here. In a bit of chicanery common to Albany, the payments are legal unless they're made directly to public officials, but since Rattner hired a middleman the law doesn't apply here. Convenient.

Amazing how crusading Eliot Spitzer missed all the pension fund corruption happening right under his nose while he was busy holding press conference about what a hotshot big swinging dick sticking it to The Man he was.

HA! I swear, for the life of me, I cannot understand why ESPN was so concerned about the NCAA taking some wins of off Bowden's record in the wake of the academic scandal. The guy is as crooked as they come. Besides, FSU is damned lucky the NCAA didn't use the dreaded "failure to maintain institutional control" label.

Fine. Let's move on.

According to the article...

There's this guy. His name is Steven Rattner. He's a Presidential adviser. He was also an executive of the Quadrangle Group, which is an investment firm. When he became a Presidential adviser, he quit the company.

This investment group has been accused of paying more than $1 million to a New York official's political aide in a bid to win a deal with the state pension fund. Other groups have been accused of similar payments.

The aide was indicted last month on corruption and bribery charges.

The SEC is looking into this.

Okay, quiz time:

Can you see where there may be some ways in which this Presidential adviser was not guilty of anything?

I can point out a few if you need help.

Ah, the Fark Flying Apologists Brigade is turning out in force. OK, let's define "linked." Founded firm. Actively managed firm until joining Administration. Actually met with people now under indictment and arranged investmets that allegedly secured access to pension program.

Now the WH is saying it knew about the investigation (and presumably was not worried), so we can wait to see what the explanation is. But it doesn't look like "linked" is too strong a term here.

I was responding to the calls of "I hope Obama dumps this guy's ass instead of trying to defend him."

Why should Obama do that at this point in time? What if the guy was not involved?

That's why I brought up the idea of perhaps WAITING for the legal process to finish its course before firing someone over mere accusations.

AdolfOliverPanties [TotalFark] 2009-04-17 12:15:41 PM
I'm not surprised. Politicians are mostly whores.

It is difficult for any president to find people who are clean to work for the administration.

The difference is shown by how the president reacts to the news of the possible or proven corruption.

Bush, for example, would accept, promote and possibly bestow Medals of Freedom upon the person. If Obama follows that same route, then he is just as much of an asshole as his predecessor on this issue.
