Yeah, but Israel is farking tiny. About 20,000 square km (about the size of New Jersey). If it's going to maintain an open immigration policy for every Jew on the planet, then there are going to be significant population pressures resulting in a drive for expansion - which I think became especially significant after the collapse of the Iron Curtain and the travel restrictions being lifted for the people that lived there.

If they pulled back to the 1967 borders, their critics would be marginalized. Similarly, if the Palestinians declared that they would recognize Israel's right to exist within those borders, and declared a bloody intifada on the Israeli settlers outside them, I get the feeling the United States and Israel would be the only people left on that side of the fence.

Its not surprising that the UN reviews its massive unresolved issue. the UN has a special responsibility for Palestine that goes back to its effort to partition the mandate for the territory in 1947. From the UN perspective this unconsummated effort to address the future of both Palestinians and Israelis is, in a sense, the greatest unresolved issue on the UN agenda.

Of course, some people would like to believe that Israelis are just victimized in all this.

I dream of a day when we cut Israel off, quit funding them and giving them weapons. Fark them. They don't want peace. They want to run the Palestinians out completely. They want to control the govts of Lebanon and their other neighbors like they do ours. The fundies here have allowed them to forge a dangerous political alliance with them.
