I can't file. Seriously. You can not enter 0 for income.

Which is, oddly enough, exactly how much I made last year.

Had a professor in school who did a series of articles on the cost/benefit analysis of tax evasion. Interesting stuff if you're an econ nerd. Do you suppose it was coincidental that she had been audited 3 times before she was 40?

pandabear [TotalFark] 2009-04-15 02:19:24 PM
It depends on if you owe taxes or are owed a return.

The government will not be in a big hurry at all to give you a return if you don't file for it.

If you owe them enough money to make it worth their while and aren't a member of the cabinet, you'll probably find an IRS agent at your door shortly.

I think you can (and must) file some form that says "I made no money last year."

No. You only file taxes if you make over a certain amount.

You don't even need to file if your withholding covers your tax debt. You only need to file if you owe money.

Yes this is 100% correct. Go ahead and don't file.

Further, there is no danger in posting all of the passwords and security question/answer combos we'd need to get to your bank account here.

In fact you should, because as your fellow farkers we'll be happy to review your account and make sure everything there is in order too.

All of these statements are equally true.

/Actually you're probably safer trusting farkers with access to your banking than you are not filing

The whole stimulus check thing last year really bummed me out. You had to make at least $3000 in order to qualify. I guess that people like me who made nothing at all aren't the right kind of "poor" to need some help.

nocturn 2009-04-15 02:54:42 PM
It's true, I suck at saving money so I claim zero on my w-2. Then I don't have to file my taxes until I need the cash.

If you expect to file a single return, the IRS requires you to file a return for 2009 if your gross income for the year is at least: $9,350 if you are under age 65. $10,750 if you are at least age 65.

Any other questions genius?

I'm living at a friend's house.

Also, don't confuse "make nothing" with "do nothing". I keep busy looking for work, studying to keep current in my field, housework, gardening, that sort of thing ;)

Then you file all at once.

I just brought my tax return to the mailbox with my check.

No interest on MY money for you, government. Not yours.

Loves when people get excited about overpaying things, but never can convince them to just overpay their cable bill or overpay for groceries.

Frank and Beans 2009-04-15 04:03:29 PM
I owe six grand for '08 because I was laid off work last year. Makes sense, eh? You pay taxes on unemployment benefits.

I can't pay it either. I filed in time but sent in no money.

Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude [TotalFark] 2009-04-15 04:03:55 PM
I knew someone who didn't pay taxes for something like 8 or 9 years. Nothing happened. Kept filing extensions or something or other and then finally got around to doing them one year. Paid a ridiculously tiny penalty and that was it.

I mean, it's the IRS people. It's not like they are a model of efficiency.

Then you're a dumbass. I'm not sure how it works w/r/t the feds giving you your back taxes, but even if they hand you a chunk of change, you just gave them an interest free loan for an entire presidential term.

Brilliant.

For the record, I owed because the sonuvabeetch who paid me for my Halloween gig wouldn't name me an employee, so I'm considered self-employed!

what_now: Any other questions genius?

Calm down, Sparky.

Would it be disingenuous to point out that it's possible to get a "tax refund" even if you didn't make any money (via Earned Income Credit, etc)? So, in certain cases, if you refuse to take 5 minutes to complete a 1040, you don't get a bunch of free money. Keep stickin' it to the man!

Actually, if you don't make any out-of-order deductions and DO pay the appropriate amount based on your income...

nothing, you've already filed your taxes!

Under the old laws that still stand, if you have paid what you owe and don't wish to contest it you're done.

If, however, you want some back you MUST file.
This is why they don't go after the people below the EIC line who either don't file or misfile short on their returns.

Vudukungfu asks a pertinent question:

If you fail to file for four years, you only get to play games with major medical deductions, you cannot actually file for EIC four years prior to the filing time.

Statute of limitations for filing a claim for refund is three years.
