This just goes to prove that the Governor seems blind to the concerns of decent, church-going, New York families.

We spent all that building the new Yankee's stadium. 100% funded by Massachusetts, its a little known fact.

Don't get excited. There's a very good chance it will fail and it will be stalled in committee for as long as possible. Patterson is just trying to give himself a progressive legacy on his way out the door and make some of his fellow Democrats, who made a deal to keep same-sex marriage off the table, look bad.

I have to give a hat tip to Patterson for signing the executive order allowing out-of-state marriages to be recognized in NY though. There is a consistency towards equality there that is admirable, no matter what his purposes with the bill are.

Barbigazi [TotalFark] 2009-04-15 04:35:45 PM
Even if this doesn't pass it would be nice to know where we stand.

fact is I'm hetero and I will tell you, if you are not married and your SO goes into the hospital you are SOL. After my SO of 13 years was screwed over in hospital we got married to ensure I or he could make choices if one of us was unable to do so. I literally needed a lawyer just to get my SO moved to a hospital with a cardiac care unit. It is not laughing matter, same sex couples should have the same rights as heteros.

BTW, if u are gay and live in VA not only can't u marry, they passed a law that u cannot enter in to contracts that confer the privileges a married couple has. I offer this to point out that the people opposed to gay marriage are hateful and their christian values are in general BS.

Gays needing words to be changed to suit their needs. That's the sick part. I don't mind gays at all. I don't even mind if they're able to have a civil union. I don't even mind if said union is considered as legal and offers as much as a marriage does. What does bother me is the whole thing could just go away if they'd just call it a civil union, be done with it, don't change the language to include something it wasn't, and stop pissing off the fundies because pissed off fundies make too much noise.

"Separate but equal" is rarely ever actually equal.
Allowing marriage is simpler than creating a different institution and getting it recognized.
"Marriage" is two people.. er, hell, signing a legal contract to merge their lives for a while, really. Plenty of people get married without love or without religion, and less than half of them last forever these days. Doesn't much matter the sexes of the people involved.

And man, fundies make such DELICIOUS noises when you piss them off. Poking 'em with sticks should be a recognized national pastime.

Finally, something I can unequivocally support the governor on. Keep it up, Governor Patterson and you'll get my vote. I want to like you, just keep it up!

The definition of marriage has never been consistent. Not even for the fundies, considering God awarded Job with several wives.

yeah, I don't know if it's his disability, or the rocky start (The botched senate seat replacement), but he does not exactly demonstrate "withitness" very well. That said, I don't disagree with his positions.

beoswulf 2009-04-15 06:51:33 PM
He should go for it, the guy's polls can't get much lower, the people that hate him can't not vote for him any less.

Also the black democrats have no real alternative to vote for here, unlike the black democrats in Cali that brought in Jim Crow for gays.

Huzzah! Do it Patterson.

I count myself among the dissillusioned that moved here under the fallacy that New York was some Shangri-La of liberal tolerance.
