Well, any "constitutional scholar" worth the appellation would know that writing the tax code is the sole province of the House of Representatives.

Rev.K [TotalFark] 2009-04-15 01:20:05 PM
I'm sure a consortium of Texas billionaires will write a damn fine tax code that is fair and equitable for all.

No president has ever proposed a policy or language for a bill, handed the same to Congress, and said "hey, how about you guys introduce and vote on that." Never happened once in history. Why doesn't Obama recognize this? I guess because it's not on his teleprompter.

politicians will keep rewriting the tax code for purely political purposes until we farking demand the FAIR tax.

The federal income tax code is just a way to punish and reward citizens based on whoever happens to be in power.
It's sickening.

Yes, then it will be gumdrops and rainbows, and enforcement will not be necessary because of the power of elf farts.

A tax system that is both progressive and is doesn't require you to hire a professional tax preparer could be done by a high school math class... unfortunately people that intelligent don't get elected to office:(

/Also H&R block spends a LOT of money on all the candidates to make sure this doesn't happen

1. the fair tax is horrendously bad
2. congress will write the fair tax for political purposes, too

Seriously, unless Obama turns out to be Jesus himself, and even then, not only do I completely 100% believe that the government would have trouble at the best of times, and be completely incapable now, but in fact they're only going to make things worse.

I'm sure he's going to do great things, the other guys all suck yadda yadda, but I just think this is too much and is going to backfire badly.

Certainly a compelling argument.
You're right...the IRS is perfect and tax laws aren't biased or manipulated for political purposes at all.

rant/
Most people in this country can file a 1040ez or 1040a. However, tax software packages and tax "preparers" like the cock suckers at HR Block don't offer these forms, because once the peasants see that a 1040EZ has literally 11 lines on it, they'll revolt and stop paying $40-120 to get their taxes done.

Unless you are self employed, own an incorporated business, or work for a foreign country, MOST people can figure out how to file their own returns. IT IS NOT HARD!!

1). Figure out your AGI
2). Figure out your deductions and exemptions(single? no kids? don't own your own home? $8,950)
3). Subtract number 2 from number 1.
4). Get Publication 17 free at any library, post office or internet. Go to the back, look at the chart that breaks down income from $0-$100,000.
5). profit.

You want to know why it "seems so hard"? Because HR Block et all spends MILLIONS of dollars a year making it look hard so you come crawling to them.

Steigen: You're right...the IRS is perfect and tax laws aren't biased or manipulated for political purposes at all.

your faith in congress that it won't mess around with any fair tax legislation for political purposes is as touchingly naive as a baby goat

You're the one claiming your "FAIR tax," which is in and of itself a manipulation of tax law for political purposes, won't be subject to manipulation for political purposes. Good luck with that.

Otherwise we poor can kiss our asses goodbye.

Bush said this same thing in one of his SOTU addresses. It never happened, and it will never happen in this admin. There are too many people who know the loopholes and succeed because of them. Soon enough Obama will find out that there is a lot of reason for the tax code being as complex as it is.

MugzyBrown [TotalFark] 2009-04-15 02:15:24 PM
As long as the congress critters want to use the tax code as a political football, this will be impossible.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

You are blaming enterprising people for capitalizing on a market.

When I had my first job at 15, I knew then that all I had to do was go to the public library and get an EZ form and *voila* my taxes are done.

I was 15.

If "most people" in this country can do this, as you say, and do not, they are stupid and should NOT be helped.

what_now: 2). Figure out your deductions and exemptions(single? no kids? don't own your own home? $8,950)

I don't know the statistics on this, but are you claiming "most" people don't own their home?

I've exceeded the standard deductions every year since I owned my home, and one year prior when I was using my personal vehicle for work. Also, using something like HR Block lets you see the difference between taking a deduction for college tuition vs a credit.

There are so many different credits around, it would take a normal person weeks to do all of the research. For 40 bucks, I'd rather have all of my research done for me. Even if it only takes you 10 hours to read up on all of the deductions and credits you may be eligible for, that's 4 bucks an hour.

I value my time much more than 4 bucks an hour.
