Even if they didn't decide to do this, they still made the choice.

sigh.

It should be pretty damn obvious by now that any healthy and sane society will have a hybrid of socialism and capitalism. Going too far in either direction will ALWAYS lead to disaster in the long run.

The better the balance, the healthier the society. It's all a matter of the right tool for the right job.

The biggest problem with America today is that just under 50% of the voting population is unable to accept this fact, no matter how great the evidence.

=========================================

Oh, well. At least the historical trend is promising. Hopefully we can get the older idiots out of power before they destroy and bankrupt America with their mix of greed and fear of the Commie boogieman.

Does anyone even remember what the fark socialism even is?

Worker control of the means of production == socialism

Mere government involvement != socialism

"Which means there are real areas of overlap between European social democracy and American liberalism: The former has defined its Eden down to a form of social capitalism, while the latter, prompted by Wall Street's implosion, has upgraded its project to the creation of, well, a form of social capitalism."

Oh no! America is becoming like the rest of the industrialized world.

According to a Rasmussen poll released last week, 37 percent of Americans under age 30 prefer capitalism, 33 percent prefer socialism and 30 percent are undecided.

Hm.

Seems like We Surround Them after all.

What's interesting about this article is how it view these issues are one of two choices. Everything in the US seems to be one of two choices. Capitalism or socialism. Republican or Democrat. Walmart or Target. The idea that any problem has only two choices seems embedded in most discourse. Every position is argued to it's extreme point.

PirateFreedom 2009-04-15 02:52:01 PM
Just because Rush and his ilk have painted everything Obama does as socialism doesn't mean the people who reject Rush's emotional, irrational hysteria are actually embracing "socialism".

they're just anti-idiot.

Using government to help poor and middle-class people. If you use government funds to help rich people or bomb people in the the third world, that's free enterprise.

TFA is correct, though. When loathsome ghouls like Limbaugh denounce socialism, many young people will say to themselves, "If they're against it, there must be something to it!" It's like the "Just Say No" campaigns of my youth. "Nancy Reagan says not to smoke pot, huh? Do you have any pot I can try?"

In both cases my decision is based largely on what would do the most to spite Ronald Reagan. I've even gone so far as to steal guns from Iran and return drugs to Colombia.

I just got back from dropping my taxes off at the p.o. and I was listening to my regular bunch of wacko's over on the AM dial. This time it was financial jesus (Dave Ramsey) and he must have skipped the meds today or something. He said we went from socialism to full blown communism now and the government is going to tell you how many kids to have, what sex the child should be and if it isn't the right sex, into the old abortion vacureemo they go. The crazy, they have turned it up to 11.

For that to be true the workers would have to control the government. Which is exactly what Marx said they would, either by revolutionary or democratic means.

But anways, of course total government control and no government control don't work. You need somewhere in between. IMO America needs bigger government in a lot of areas right now and smaller in a few. We need to get more in line with the rest of the industrialized democracies or we will become an oligarachy that consumes ourself into oblivion.

dfxdeimos: Worker Government control of the means of production == socialism

Nope. You're thinking of Communism, my friend.

What people (in this country, who are badly educated) forget is that Marx didn't invent Socialism; it was already around in England while he was writing the Communist Manifesto. It was a logical outgrowth of the feudal master/peasant system, as the English understood the relationship was symbolic: the landed gentry relied on the farmers for their income and the farmers relied on the landed gentry to protect and support them in times of crisis and famine.

Shaggy_C 2009-04-15 02:58:44 PM
Our banking system has been partially socialized since the inception of the Federal Reserve. This latest round is just a reassertion of that fact. "What the lord giveth, the lord taketh away; and the lord's cronies geteth more money and you can just shuteth the fark upeth, citizen."

Apparently, when Socialism comes to America, its will be in reaction to those wrapping themselves in the flag while carrying a cross.

Lawnchair 2009-04-15 03:02:36 PM
If we're going by today's GOP/FoxNews/Limbaugh definition of socialism, Debs won a long, long time ago. Hoover, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Clinton, and, if you want to be honest, Reagan, would all be classified as socialists under this new definition. If we accept it, then, yes, socialism was the default ideology for most of the 'American Century', and it's not a shock that more people are interested in going back there.

I need to know where these people get the brass balls to claim that bailing out and government controlling the banks and the largest corporations in the country isn't socialism but taking out the tax cuts on the highest 1% of the country somehow is.

And why is farking Rush Limbaugh getting so much press now anyway? He's Howard Stern without the strippers.
