By the standards of the modern GOP, Newt is an even-tempered genius filled with the spirit of bipartisanship. Sadly, he's the best they've got.

The whole teabagging thing is just a springboard to bring newt back into the GOP center stage.

I still want Palin, but Newt will do. Those little random bits of crazy strewn about in his commentary will make for good replayability.

Someone with Newt's ego? Apologize?
Never.
Those are two of the biggest egos in the republican party today, and if they got into it... the fireworks would be INCREDIBLE.

That's a great idea! Now if they could come up with running mate we also won't vote for.

This. Thing is he appears a touch off put by the crazy at times these days. And if he says he is, the Newt versus Rush show off could be epic.

Yep, pretty much this. In addition, he blames FDR for the Great Depression and thinks we should go back to the gold standard. Ron Paul maniacs will love him.

Just kidding; it won't matter who you nominate.

Shoot for 2016.

Newt is a master manipulator of the media. He'll keep his name just on the surface, quietly reminding people, "Remember who brought the GOP back before?". But I doubt he'll run; he's far too polarizing. If a Republican wins in 2012 (highly doubtful) or 2016 (possible), I can see him as a senior advisor-type person. Most of the popular Republicans are going to wait until 2016, anyhow. No sense in being the new Dole or Mondale.

EwoksSuck 2009-04-14 11:10:33 PM
Newt has some really nutty ideas. He would spy on us all in the name of national security at a level that would make even Bush, Cheney, and Gonzo blush. Newt has said he would do this. His personal life makes Bill Clinton blush. Obama and the press would eat him for lunch.

You're kidding. I'm still having arguments with Repubs who swear up and down Palin was a smart, savvy politician with some fresh ideas for stirring up Washington and who would have been an outstanding VP to McCain's Wise Old President. I don't know if this is some kind of psychotic denial or brain rot, but they seem sincere.

I think Newt's more or less a competent administrator... but he really sucks as an actual politician. I'm leery of someone who can't phrase things even slightly politically.

Basically: int 16, but Cha 6. No leadership feat for you.

Hello all well/ill meaning tyrants: The GOP is currently accepting casting calls for the next despot. BIG PLUS if you look/act like Ronald Reagan, but since the fear-based right is currently in a gyrating tizzy, having the traits of former European dictators is also highly favorable.

Now's your chance to run a superpower under the control of an iron fist! Nuke countries you hate, and gas those horrid libs! Please apply at the tea party nearest you!

The fact he counts as bipartisan really goes to show how sad the GOP is.
He should be considered the base of the party. and if he were I would respect that. a party needs cornerstones of politics, he fits the bill. he is not anywhere close to the center though. He shouldn't be considered that.ever.

Ron Paul is sorta like that weird professor you had in school, weird hair, weird sense of humor. Every once and a while he'll have a genius idea, but all of the other stuff he spews is so batshiat insane, you don't know whether to trust the good ideas.

But yeah.... Newt is probably the most even-tempered, sensible, high-profile Republican around these days... sad.

Continue with the leftist tactic of responding to how something was said, not actually to what was said (or typed in this case).

They didn't? With all of his moderate positions, he sure made a strong case for it. Or are you going to argue that Clinton-era taxation on the rich makes him like Stalin or something. Because that's full-retard and you don't want to go there.

Wasn't he found to be the most leftist senator, based off voting records, in Congress (even surpassing the actual Socialist Bernie Sanders)?

zefal 2009-04-15 01:49:36 AM
What lefties mean by "thoughtful centrist": A Republican who will swallow leftwing socialist cum a few sips at a time as opposed to a Republican who will tell them to take a hike.

nancy pelosi, harry reid, barry obama, barney frank, charlie schumer, barbara boxer, maxine waters, hillary clinton, sheila jackson are what they consider thoughtful centrists.

Democrats have to run on Republican positions to get elected then have their media shills cover for them when they do the complete opposite.
