flaminglip: Dear T Pain & Daft Punk

/you are using it wrong

Wow, you must've not listened to much Daft Punk. There are multiple songs in which they use the vocoder quite well (off the top of my head, Something About Us and One More Time had extremely good vocoder parts). Although I will admit, my faves are usually songs that are instrumentals, or ones which feature a talkbox rather than a vocoder.

I clicked thinking it was a Terry Tate video, and the noise that I found instead completely freaked out my cat.

Thats a screen shot of Antares Auto-Tune, the software that can subtlely correct pitch fluctuations and flats/sharps in vocal performances, but got used with a vocoder-sounding effect when Cher's producers used it on the hook of "Believe". Vocoder skill is an entirely different ballgame; these tools just sing into a computer and play with the settings of auto-tune until they sound robotic.

/greatest vocoder performance i've ever heard is imogen heap's "hide and seek"

Look, flaminglip, any musical hardware can be used creatively or uncreatively.

If a cellist starts thwacking his bow against the side of his cello, it might sound like shiat. Then he'd be "doing it wrong." If on the other hand he was making a funky beat, then it would be a cool extension of his cello technique.

The auto-tune rack unit is definitely used as a crutch by wimpy singers who are too addicted to pitch-correction to go without it at live shows. Celebrate this or bemoan it, it is what it is.

BUT It has nothing to do with using pitch modification software or hardware to achieve a processed vocal sound. Some groups perform serious audio wizardry to make themselves sound like alien robots from saturn, and that's exciting! Our generation gets the opportunity to listen to sounds that no one else in history ever got to.

You don't have to like it. But you should recognize that some of the best musical innovations in history have come through "misusing" music instruments and techniques.

flaminglip: I'm also a big fan of acts using said effects in an effective way (Animal Collective's Sung Tongs for example) but Daft Punk and T Pains usage of the vocoder/autotuner is juvenile at best and total crap at worst.

I'm sorry bro but T-Pain's music is hot. I know you want to like it(because you "hate" it so much), but don't because of peer pressure, self-denial, and/or social stigmas so quit bullshiatting yourself and everyone around you and enjoy it. If not then quit yer biatchin because hater shiat like that is juvenile at best and total crap at worst.

FTFY, even though T-Pain wasn't the one who sang that in the song.

Still, I like what you were going with that.

flaminglip: noahad

I actually agree with a lot of what you are saying here. I'm pretty fluent with Reason and Cubase (and respective VSTs) and have used these programs in my own compositions for films, commercials and personal shiat.

I'm also a big fan of acts using said effects in an effective way (Animal Collective's Sung Tongs for example) but Daft Punk and T Pains usage of the vocoder/autotuner is juvenile at best and total crap at worst.

Daft Punk use it in a creative way, they make techno music and use vocoder/autotune/talkbox to get a robot sound. Works for their music because it's exactly what it calls for.

Kanye and T-Pain and all these other "rappers" and what not are overusing it now because it's the IT effect to use.

Hell, a couple weekends ago, my band was recording our EP and one of the songs our singer was flat, tried it a few times and couldn't hit it. Sounded fine, just a little flat. We used autotune on it and it worked great, didn't make him sound like a robot. It has it's uses and is an awesome program, it's just being abused.

Although, I think we're going to come out with a version of that song that has him sounding like a robot. It's not on our myspace, I think we're about to drop that song completely anyways. Blah...sorry...long.
