11. Eminem, 8 Mile (2002)

This fails both qualifiers, actor and musician.

What instrument did Sinatra play? (asking because i don't ever recall hearing about him or seeing him play an instrument)

Does not play an instrument = !Musician

Singers are not musicians unless they... play an instrument.

Never considered Frank to be all that great of an actor.

Interesting bit of trivia. Dirty Harry was originally pitched to him but he had injured his hand (pimp hand?) and had to pull out. Then it was pitched to John Wayne who said he didn't want Frank's leftovers. At some point I think Paul Newman said Clint Eastwood would be good for it.

Then again Von Ryan's Express is a guilty pleasure of mine.

God damn Tom Waits was excellent in Dracula. Mystery Men as well.

Also, I believe the author misspelled Freejack.

That one's actually grown on me. Although I think it would've been better if Rockwell and Def switched roles.

So very, very wrong. Singers - real singers, which Frank Sinatra most certainly was - are very much musicians. Their instrument just happens to be a part of their body. They have just as much need for technical competence, practice, and talent as any other musician.

Sure, there are a lot of barely-competent "singers" out there who are 95% entertainer and 5% musician...but that's true for a lot of instrumentalists, too.

Musician == someone who makes music. If you make music with your voice, you are a musician.

It counts for me. He's awesome in BoB. Also good in his small bit in Sixth Sense.

Shame he's fallen back into the NKOTB.

umm...I hate Hip hop and R&B but i'm going to have to say that Justin Timberlake should have made the list.

The kid has a great music career. Its not really my taste but I'll fully admit he has boatloads of talent. He has also been doing very well acting. You may remember him from such films as Black snake moan and The Love Guru (in which he was the only entertaining part of the movie)

Also... Frank Sinatra was the first John McClane!

Die Hard was based on a book called Nothing Lasts Forever, NLF was a sequel to a book called The Detective. In the movie version of TD the protagonist (Joe Leland in the books) is played by ... Frank Sinatra.

I loved him in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide' LOL I read the books afterward, and found Mos Def's protrayal more personable than the book's.

As for 'Something the Lord Made' .. that's like leaving off Puff Daddy for just about every movie he's been in. That's not the type of movie the site would sit down and watch, right?

I think not. It would appear that those on the list are primarily musicians who dabble in acting, while both Wahlberg brothers actually abandoned music for acting.

swahnhennessy 2009-04-13 02:00:53 PM
I was hoping to see Nick Cave in that list. He's done precious little acting, and his roles are tiny, but he leaves an impression.

OK.

i think that definition dilutes the word a bit. Since anyone with working pipes can sing (pleasantly or otherwise). i sing in my car, poorly i suppose, but it seems odd to call me and Sinatra both musicians. Or to call Liszt and Sinatra musicians. That's not a comment on how "good" either is, but on the meaningfulness of the term.

One uses their voice to sing. Is singing (in and of itself) music then? Hrm.

Sound engineers and producers (could) make music w/o being able to play a note on anything (vocal or otherwise). So they would be musicians as well. Seems like an empty term if it is that broad.
