It's obviously worth letting millions of law-breakers into the country to absorb trillions in benefits than accidently deport one mentally ill citizen.

I really hope the US Law Enforcement department in charge posted a sorry comment on that guy's Myspace page. That seems to cure all ill feelings.

Your troll is very strong.

Yet in 2007, the 31-year-old Los Angeles native - in jail for a misdemeanor, mentally ill and never able to read or write - signed a waiver agreeing to leave the country without a hearing and was deported to Mexico as an illegal immigrant.

Basically, what this shows is that the law is willing to make people say they are guilty when they are not.

The people responsible for this should be out of their position of authority and made to work fast food for the rest of their life.

Troll, but yes, I'd say that it is better. Especially since this would not have happened to mentally ill "Joe Smith" if he was picked up on the streets in Schenectady. If an illegal immigration crisis is all it takes for Hispanic Americans to suddenly become second-class citizens, then America has not come as far as it thinks it has.

It's obviously worth accidentally trampling on people's rights just so you can make sure you are always showing your racist constituents that you're trying to kick brown people out of their nice shiny white country club gated community.

Now let's hear about how winning the birth lottery entitles you to stay in the USA pumping out trailer trash kids and collecting welfare while honest hard working immigrants should have to stay out so they don't take your job (that you were fired from).

Not bad.

If they were honest they'd be here legally. They've already demonstrated a willingness to violate the law. They don't belong here seeing as they're criminal scum.

Unless, of course, they *are* attempting to immigrate legally and being kept out by archaic immigration laws.

Also, "honest" and "legal" are not actually the same as evidenced by lying but legal politicians, advertisements, and right-wing pundits but now we're just splitting hairs.

Immigration is a slippery slope, and its a very screwed up system. My husband is from Peru, and we've been dealing with their crap for the past 6 years (until he got his citizenship back in August).

People always mention how if these immigrants were honest, they wouldnt have tried to cross the border illegally.
Here's the problem - it is extremely difficult to even get a damn Visa to the US, and since their countries literally have no jobs, they come to the "promised land" where they want to find the American dream.

Its really sad. :(

Where's the Fat Guy?

Er, I mean The Family Guy.

An argument for deporting more Americans right there. Starting with the writers.

What American democracy needs a the ancient Greek custom of ostracism (voting people off the island--as they called it in ancient Greece--except, of course, on the mainland, where it was called voting them off the peninsula). But don't send Rush Limbaugh or Pat Buchanan to Canada or we're shipping them back at your expense in a car full of mad cow-infected cattle.

FTFA: The result is the detention of citizens with the fewest resources: the mentally ill, minorities, the poor, children and those with outstanding criminal warrants, ranging from unpaid traffic tickets to failure to show up for probation hearings.

I hear ya. It's a huge, expensive, time-consuming pain in the ass trying to get my wife here, even though she's from Canada, which is like the closest thing our country has to a twin brother. Lots of people assume that if you're married to a US citizen, you can just come to live here automatically, or that you just file a one-page form and can move within a month. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

There are lots of people who would love to be here legally and be productive citizens who work for a wage just like everybody else, but the system sure doesn't make it easy.

When you plant drugs on a citizen, you're supposed to send them to prison to be raped to death, not to Mexico to die from dysentery.

Breaking the law is not a good way to start the legal immigration process. I'm not one to complain about criminals really but, you know, there's such a thing as excess. We've shipped them home by the train load in the past, we should do it again. We can then start with a real overhaul of the policies starting with actually requiring them to do stuff like speak the language and swear loyalty to the king.

Err... Or something like that.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware I'm supposed to feel bad for an illiterate, mentally-ill individual who obviously isn't cognizant enough to realize what's happening to him- why isn't anyone bashing his family/friends/caregivers for allowing him to get arrested, tossed in jail, then signing things with no counsel?

Beyond that, where where the people who are supposed to be caring for him (and there clearly should be, given his citizen status and mental state) when he was committing whatever misdemeanor that got him tossed in the can in the first place?

My sympathy, you cannot has it.

I realize that this is likely a case of racist/bigoted cops and ICE agents wanting to chalk up another number on their official tally, and I'm sure there are cases of things like this happening where I'd feel really bad about the mix up- unfortunately, this is not one of them.

No, here's the problem. They come here and don't want the American dream, they just want what they can get until they can leave. They don't think of this as their country, they are just working here.

I spoke to one of the 'cleaning staff' at the office, she was asking about where I lived, barely spoke English but enough, she told me she has a nice house - in Guatemala, and that when she retired she was going back home.

No, I think the majority are just here to make what they can, get what they can and leave when they can. This is not their country, they do not learn English because they will be returning to their country as soon as it is financially feasible.

This is why it is hard to get a visa, I know, my fiancee' is from China, and we have been trying for 2 years to just get her here, if she was from Mexico/South America at least she would be here and my trips to China would only be to visit her folks.
