I don't think at any point of my life i have ever so much as chuckled or been almost amused at any of the comics I have read in the newspaper.

here's an idea, let the following comedians do comics:

Jim Norton .. about a lonely kid in the Red Light District
Dave Attell .. an alcoholic father who is terrible to his family
Patrice O'Neal ..the Black Phillip strip.. a womanizer
Artie Lange .. twin brothers, drug-addled, run a daycare
Robert Schimmel .. nurses hotline volunteer
Louis Black .. lobbyist

feel free to add your own

St_Francis_P: Laugh all you like, but Family Circle got kind of edgy at times:

Yeah, there's the parody versions, Dysfunctional FC, all that.

However, the actual original comics TOO were far funnier and less saccharine than currently, when the strip debuted.

Here's one from the 60's:

If I recall correctly, the strip used to be called "The Family Circle" but was later changed to "The Family Circus".

You are correct (new window):

"The strip generally uses a single captioned panel with a round border, hence the original name of the series, which was changed following objections from Family Circle, the magazine of the same name."

FTFA: "the hilarious Fusco Brothers. . .and Baby Blues"

Article fails.

And how is Non Sequitur politically correct?

I will grant the article's author that comics lately have sucked. Seems to have been going downhill since syndicates tried to replace the Far Side with dozens of unfunny, weird-because-the-Far-Side-was-a-little-eccentric wannabe clones.

Who but the aged and infirmed read newspaper comic strips since The Far Side, Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes left? Even Dilbert pisses me off ever since I had to see a cut out strip stapled to every cubicle in the office. If office life sucks so much, leave like I did.

The newspaper I read "revamped" their comics section a while back. The removed Pearls Before Swine and replaced it with Zack Hill, which looks like it's drawn by a fourth grader. Epic fail, Anchorage Daily News, epic fail.

I actually submitted something similar to this a week ago. I read Edge city a couple of times on sfgate. That has to be the least funny comic strip ever:

There are some hilarious comics that major newspapers don't or won't carry:

Perry Bible Fellowship
Red Meat
Get Your War On
Bigfoot
Dinosaur Comics
xkcd

I know some of these are weekly format comics, and some are web-only, but that shouldn't be a barrier to introducing them to the newspaper format. Just adding those six comics above would hugely improve the comics section and there are plenty of other artists out there that would serve as well.

The problem with news comics is that the majority of them are 30+ year old strips, which hardly qualifies as "news".

i work in newspaper, so im really blah blah blah...

seriously, though i think the funny-ness of comics folow the arc of For Better, For Worse. At one point, the story-line seemed to be about the lighter side of a family growing up in the eightees, and then the trials and tribulations of the children becoming adults.

As time goes on, it becomes less funny and more somber. The kids endure hardships, the dog dies... (Of course, during this same time, the author's marriage was falling apart and eventually ended, as did the comic strip....)

Cynical on Easter this year? Maybe. More realistic than we were in the naive eightees? Probably...

There's this thing called "Google"...

Perry Bible Fellowship is pretty good but Red Meat gets kind of redundant.

"ctrlaltdel" is pretty funny but it's a bit too "inside" with the gaming geeks and of course too profane for a newspaper.

Who even gets the newspaper who doesn't have a bird cage anymore?
