Wait... I thought they had some innate ability to detect each other by smell or something and only attack the normal people.

FTFA: "Mental hospital patients at risk from each other"

I think I know how to make some money off of that:

I didn't read anything about the state being 'shocked'. It seems they're aware of it but don't really have the interest or resources to do much about it.

A-HA! Proof that government doesn't work!

Quick, starve the beast by cutting funding for all mental institutions; put the loonies out on the street.

Surely that will solve the problem.

I'm a mental patient, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

I was a mental patient, so I am really getting a kick out of these replies. Most wards have bored, overweight nurses who never look at the room moniters, and it's up to you to shoo crazies out of your room all the time. Had a retarded woman follow me into my room and refuse to leave, also found a guy who looked like Blago smelling my clothes.

I worked with mental patients for 5 years. Whenone of them has a violent episode, they'll hit anyone and evryone.

Jimmy Carter already tried that. That's why we have so many problems with mental health treatment in this country.

I think this could be exploited - I hear the army is running low on applicants

What's up with all the Carter references today?

Dear AJC,
Two people wrote this article. TWO. In both their brains they could not discern that the title should be something related to the JAIL. The jail where this is happening. Not the hospital that did their job. Adan wanted to kill everybody stick him in a cell where he belongs. OH WAIT. Stick him on a floor in the jail where they allow the mentally ill to walk freely. WTF?

Interest is more like it. The state doesn't give a shiat about mental health patients, and has been cutting funds for it for years, regardless of whether the mental health patient has just a mild mental disorder, or if the patient is considered a danger.

Not quite.

Adan killed one guy in jail and the other guy at the hospital.

I understand Georgia is looking to hire him to do executions on a full time basis.

Accused of murder: There should be a choice of Guilty or Not Guilty. Fark the insanity excuse. Either they did it or they didn't. If they didn't, let them go. If they did, punish them. Murderers do not deserve to be treated for any alleged mental illness.

Been on both sides of the table in psych wards and it's all because no one can figure out what we want to do with the violent mentally ill. Treat them? Then some people scream "THEY'RE GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER!!!!!" Incarcerate and/or execute them? Then some people scream "YOU CAN'T BLAME THEM FOR SOMETHING THAT'S NOT THEIR FAULT!!!!!"

Both views have some merit, IMO, which also has some merit, being that I'm mentally ill myself. The violent MI are a very small percentage of the mentally ill population. In many if not most cases, they are violent because of the passage, in the 70's and 80's, of laws which prevent forcible hospitalization and medication that would make these folks less violent.

So, decide, people. Either deprive them of some civil rights, to wit, the right to refuse medication which will lessen their psychosis; or deprive them of some other civil rights, to wit, the right to use diminished capacity as a legal defense. But as long as they have both, you'll get situations like this.
