Rodent? Disgusting!

It's not as if rabbit is part of the traditional European diet.

Many Venezuelans regard the semi-aquatic creature as more fish than meat - a useful description during Lent when it is eaten as a replacement for red meat in this largely Roman Catholic country.

So let me get this straight, a Rat is a fish because it can swim? What if they found a cow that was in a river, would that make it ok to eat as well? Silly religious nuts and their justifications for following certain rules as they see fit.

No, the capybara is considered a fish for religious purposes because of some early problems in getting natives to accept dietary restrictions during Lent. Essentially, the church decided it was better to let the new converts just eat the capybara as a concession to their desires than to possibly alienate them and lose them to their original religions. It's an interesting chapter in Catholicism's adaptability to local cultures.

Basically, the church saw "traditional Lent diet" as a non-essential part of the faith, so the rules could be changed in this case. Not a moral issue or one that challenges the basic tenets of the religion, so it doesn't matter too much.

How would you make it worth your effort? Cook like 10 of them at once? I can just imagine a dinner party with everyone suckling on little guinea pig bones and chatting about how delicious they are until they move onto the goldfish.

What's scary about eating a rodent, wussmitter? It sounds friggin' tasty to me.

Or did you just want to make the lazy farktards who don't know how to read more than 2 sentences at a time think that starving Venezuelans are eating rats out of desparation?

/methinks 'tis the latter

UsikFark 2009-04-12 11:33:56 AM
People with large reptile collections raise their own rodents. I know at least one person who was confident enough to cook up rat meat. Boiled rat meat looks and tastes just like chicken, which IMO is the only truth to the cliche.

Very many years ago, the Bolivians were starving so.
They had rats as big as ponies there. They asked the Pope
To declare them fish.

We thank the Pope for granting us this wish.
When Friday comes, we'll all call rats fish.
We catch them with a net, kill with the gun.
We'll call it all forgotten when we're done.

They didn't look like rats at all, but like some horrendous horse doll.
Still they had to eat this thing.
In gratitude, the Pope-they kissed his ring.

We thank the Pope for granting us this wish.
When Friday comes, we'll all call rats fish.
We catch them with a net, kill with the gun.
We'll call it all forgotten when we're done.

\i hate it when people post lyrics, but one of my favorite bands does a song about this, so i can be a big hypocrite.

What's with the "scary" tag? Capybara and guinea pigs are herbivores and not nearly the disease vectors rats are. Guinea pigs were raised for food long before they were pets. Objectively, capybara are probably less repellant as a food source than pigs.

\I've been told guinea pig tastes a bit like roast beef
\\mmm guinea pig Reuben

I think the Peruvian government is sponsoring research and breeding programs to produce a ten-pound guinea pig, one of which would be a good meal for a average Peruvian family. Since you can raise guinea pigs on forage and scraps, it would be an easy way to fight hunger and malnutrition.

Exactly how big does something have to be for you to eat it? Also the guinea pigs we are talking about are a bit bigger than your son's.

/I would eat one.

My friend lived in Ecuador for a while. She wrote me a letter telling me about how the dog was outside going crazy barking at something, so they all went out to see what it was. He had found a possum and was picking it up and shaking it, throwing it around, chasing it, slapping it with his paw, etc. After watching this for a while, they hit the possum on the head with a shovel, took it to be butchered, and ate it for dinner. It was the first meat she'd eaten in weeks and said it was the best meal she'd eaten in a long time.

Rodents that I have eaten, rabbit, hare, woodchuck, beaver, muskrat, squirrel and more than likely a few more in other countries. Most were good to very good depending on who was doing the cooking and how they were prepared.

One of the reasons humans managed to cover every continent on this world is because we will, in fact, eat just about anything that doesn't kill us.
