Happy Easter Farkers! The Brothers Sweet wish you would leave behind your heathen ways and rock out for Jesus! So just for today (or at least a few minutes), I'll stop listening to the music of Satan and Give thanks and praise... that I never got hit in the knob by a bible at the end of one of their shows!

It's from an episode of King of the Hill, and Hank is chewing out a Christian youth group leader.

And Hell shall answer. Belphegor - Hell's Ambassador (new window)

I'm not even going to bother with commenting on Stryper, I'll just post my recommendations for the week.

Minhyriath - Lothloryen
(new window) - Lord of the Rings themed Metal that is pretty kick ass, even without the cool lyrical themes. This is just a one man project and I have to say that the album this song appears on (Gondolyn), does a good job of creating a Lord of the Rings type of atmosphere without spending half a day trying to get you into it.

Dalriada - Mégegyszer (new window) - Pretty cool Hungarian band that plays Folk Metal. I see a lot of people compare them to Eluveitie (mainly because they have a female vocalist), but I think Dalriada is a lot better and doesn't stray too far from the Metal aspect of the music. Most of the folk instrumentation is authentic and not produced by synths.

The Absence - Dead and Gone (new window) - I submitted them this week, but I don't think The Absence will ever get their own SHMHC. They are an American band that plays Melodic Death Metal even better than many European bands. They put on an awesome live show and Jamie Stewart (their lead singer) really knows how to liven up the crowd. Their cover of Into the Pit is also pretty badass.

once i saw it was a live performance, stuck around to see if he could hit the high note at the end...he did...they may have been cheesy but they were pretty good musicians..back when that acutally meant something

Saw them a few years ago. Good show. I personally prefer their first album to Riders, though.

My recs:
Beyond the Sixth Seal - Feral Dreamer (new window) - mid-tempo (almost doomy) melodic death from US. Side project of members from The Red Chord. One of my favorite vocalists ever.

The Arcane Order - The Sanity Insane (new window) - thrashy melodic death from Denmark. I love Danish metal.

Hollenthon - On the Wings of a Dove (new window) - symphonic death from Austria. Opus Magnum is in my top five albums of 2008.

Actually back in the day Jimmy Swaggart and his ilk were very opposed to "Christian Rock". IIRC, the crux of the argument was that rock music had "unchristian" roots. I'm not sure how the blues was inherently unchristian in nature though.

I don't know that I'd consider that melodic death metal. It seems more on the vein of Lamb of God.

A few of the recent releases I should be listening to are Neuaxis' and Faceless's new albums. I'm still stuck on Arghoslent's Hornets of Pogrom despite discovering a fair bit of racism in the lyrics. The riffs are so damn good! I can over look that little detail.

You mean Neuraxis' The Thin Line Between? Pretty darn good. New Faceless is good too, but I prefer Obscura to either of them. Severed Saviour and Decrepit Birth are also good in roughly the same style.

For the longest time, I was confusing Obscura with the album Gorguts released with the same title name. It had to be over a year till I finally realized they were two completely different things haha

I'll check out the other two listed. Im more of a thrash/melodic death kind of guy but triggered drums kind of turn me off. At least TRY and make your sample sound a little more natural fellas!

I think I know which LoG song you are referring to (I'm not sure of the name as I don't listen to them), while I do agree that there are similarities in the main riff, the songs are completely different, especially when it hits the chorus. In addition, The Absence throws you into a solo instead of a breakdown. You should check out more of The Absence's music and get a real taste of what they have to offer because they are probably a lot different than the picture that you now have etched into your head.

Yeah, that bugged me for a while too, but there's a long history of great bands taking their name from a song/album of another band and sounding nothing like them... that said, Obscura seems especially absurd considering how groundbreaking the album was.

You'll probably like DB more than SS. But make sure to check out their latest albums. SS's previous album was more straightforward Unique Leader-style death metal, and DB's previous wasn't as melodic. Here's some good tracks (couldn't find any recent SS on YouTube):

Decrepit Birth - The Living Doorway
Decrepit Birth - Dimensions Intertwine

and some Gorod just in case you haven't heard them:

Gorod - Chronicle From The Stone Age

I dont know the first and third bands but I like Dalriada a lot. I also like Eluveitie a lot. Their new album, Evocation, is a great folk album.

My recommendations:

Finsterforst - Das Grosse Erwachen: Link part 1 (new window)
Link part 2. Its a long song. (new window)
Epic folk metal kind of like Moonsorrow. This whole album is one of my top albums of the year.

Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs: Link (new window)
New Black metal by the same guy who does Alcest. Not Satanic blck metal. Not cheesy black metal. Good black metal.

CrystalMoors - Wrath of Centvries: Link (new window)
Viking Folk Death metal. Reminds me a bit of Amon Amarth but with more folk influence.

Ok, So I submitted Negura Bunget.

And at the end of last weeks thread, I posted some death metal in response to someone whining about there being no death metal. I'm going to copy/paste it in case people missed it.

The Monolith Deathcult - Trivmvirate: I just discovered these guys, and am really likeing them. They play a style of brutal death metal with some weird atmospheric sounds to make their stuff sound really epic. A definite Mithras and Bolt Thrower influence shines through in their music.

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Oracles: Some excellent death metal, who have recently released their first album Oracles. The throw in many orchestral flurishes to keep things intresting.

Lykathea Aflame - Elvenfiris: This is an atmospheric band from the Czech Republic, and they play some awesome brutal death metal. Their album has a middle-eastern sound, coupled with a somewhat uplifting atmosphere, and positive lyrics.

The works of Salem Kirban (great first name for a witch hunter) are the required reading here. (Try Satan's Music Exposed.) Evidently, the rock beat itself is Satanic. Kirban quoted an "experiment" where classical music was played to an African tribe, who nodded and smiled and danced along to the music. When a rock record was suddenly put on, the tribe ran for their spears and started doing a war dance/voodoo ritual. Therefore, the beat of rock music is the Devil's pulse.

Horseshiat, all of it. But as reading material, it's simultaneously hilarious and depressing.

Did you even listen to my suggestions? Two of those aren't even Death Metal. And the one that is Death Metal is actually Melodic Death Metal which doesn't really sound much like regular Death Metal.

And as for your comment saying that you could listen to a thousand Death Metal songs and nobody could tell the difference, I'm sure that is true for you. Good job. I'll keep on listening to all the various sub genres and have an easy time telling the differences. I'll also keep enjoying them. You go ahead and make fun of me for it. That won't detract from my enjoyment and will only add to your frustration with music that is alien to your taste.
