So much for getting kicks above the waistline.

When I finally get my own country, I'm just going to declare a constant state of emergency. That way, I don't have to worry about individual liberties.

I was listening to the BBC the other day and couldn't help but laugh when they were talking about Red Shirt Protesters and Yellow Shirt Protesters. Sounds like a bad musical.

A large amount of the red-shirts are former yellow-shirts who are only in it for the money.

Unfortunately Toxin Squareheadawatcha has a lot of that so this BS will continue for a while. Meantime Thailand's image takes a further beating and those dependent on tourism (which is a large percentage of the population) start going hungry.

Thanks a bunch Toxin, you farking douchenozzle.

From what I've heard, this country has a resilient tourism niche.

It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity to be sitting in a jail, not looking at the city.

Both sides hire people (sometimes the same people) to protest? Very interesting.

Yakuza rents out their part-timers to various political groups/politicians to protest. Probably a pretty good way to raise some money.

Right now it is (and has been the last couple of months) been taking a beating. Friend that works at top flight Bangkok hotel says they are at 30% occupancy. When I was there a couple of months ago the difference between then and a couple of years earlier was amazing (in the number of foreign tourists). Great deals to be had on hotels.

Why did they go to red-shirt? Don't they know they're sure to be killed when the landing party beams down? =(

It's a good first step, but the world needs a despot like Lord Vetinari. First declare an absence of rights to the proles, but don't interfere in their daily lives. Then stack up all the political forces in the area just so and make sure they are inconvenienced by a world without you more than a world with you. Then, have some toast.

I could make a killing selling magic amulets to these people. "They ward off riot police!"
If they believe Taksin, they'll believe anything.

When I was there in February, even without having any past visits to compare it to, it was pretty obvious that tourism was down. The normal touristy places felt empty, and the airport looked like a ghost town. There were still a lot of Indian and Middle Eastern tourists, but the Western tourism was weak.

The resilient niches tend to be the more well-heeled bunch who are unlikely to have run-ins with the law during their Thai holiday but are concerned about being blockaded in airports due to politics.

The pedos and junkies have by and large switched their attention to Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines and the Dominican Republic where law enforcement is even worse.

Situations like this will alarm the well-heeled holidaymaker far more than the backpacker market and that will create a situation where we have to start laying people off.

The continuing strength of the Thai Baht is also not helping but those of us doing business in Thailand are in general agreement that the Baht is going to fall, and fall hard, sooner rather than later.

Nemo's Brother 2009-04-12 12:10:10 PM
If the West didn't have such a large portion of pedos/rapists/perverts, there would be no tourism in that part of the world.

It doesn't help that the government is doing everything they can to stop what they call 'low quality tourism'...which was westerners coming in with a little chunk of money and bouncing the border every 30 days to renew their visa. They were living there for years, and Many of them have families there and feed large amounts of money into the local economies. 'Low quality tourists' were a huge chunk of their tourism industry.

But then, if the Thai government did something that wasn't counterproductive and damaging to Thailand, I'd be stunned. The king needs to come out and tell them all to knock it off.

And this is why I finally understand as an american why Thais love their Kings so much....

They are the ones who provide stability when the govrenment fals

Well, this one does. The entire cultural identity revolves around the Nation-Religion-King triumvirate. Take one away, and you've really messed with the people.

I have to say "Song Phra Charoen" because when his son ascends, the Thais will be so screwed.

/my family are yellow shirts, but I'm an American libertarian
