People were honestly playing this up as "another one of Obama's failed promises" because he said he'd get his kids a dog at the end of his campaign and it hadn't happened yet. The opposition was actually suggesting that he lied to his own kids for the sake of a saccharine photo-op moment.

Actually, nobody in the opposition paid much attention until Obama answered Leno's question about the dog and allowed as how the dog was a campaign promise and he was no longer campaigning. The sycophantic press has been all a-twitter about the long anticipated dog, not too many others. Obama is screwing things up so fast that "the first dog" is the least of this country's worries.

When was this? I read some satirical things about it, but I've never heard anyone being serious. Then again, I don't watch the HannityBeckLimbaughO'reilly show, so maybe I missed it.

That said, you gotta admit it's kind of douchebaggish to get a pure breed instead of a rescue dog, and then fix that by sending a check to the HSUS. It's like buying a Hummer and then saying "but I bought Carbon Credits!"
