Peter Hook couldn"t have a more apt last name.. What catchy freaking bass-line on lots and lots of Division songs... which works in perfect contrast to the well of depression IAN is singing from.. its hard to feel depressed to a song like "Digital" , "disorder" or this one when its such an upbeat catchy line..

took me years before I finally got to read all of IAN's lyrics, which I could never make out... first time I read that , I was like "Are you shiatting me?" ... they read like one long apologetic suicide letter ... "Isolation" is so freaking sad

very good video.

i love this song.
i have the JD official bootleg, Lp, Preston Warehouse, [single LP], which has this song on it. great sound on that one [don't have the Part 2 of the 2 LP preston set, so i can't comment on that part]
i'm not too much of a fan of the "les bains douches" bootleg record... worse sound quality, but chaotic gig...

"closer" is still one of my favourite albums of the 80's.

my uncle lended [lent?] me the LP when i was an impressionable teenager [lol] [i think in the summer of 1999] along with "Here Comes the Warm Jets" by Eno. i used to think 'closer' was so drab and depressing and melancholy. now, not so much... odd, that.

i love the drummer... forget his name... so unique, so great.
[one of my fav. drummers of the 80's along with Stewart Copeland, Omar Hakim, Pick Withers, etc.]
nice they made

Hook was great too.... Bernard Sumner was a good guitarist, fit the band its sound very well, not the most technically excellent guitarist, but every melody line he played just plain FIT.

is it wrong that I'm laughing at Ian twitching?

/yes, for entertainment I did watch his body twitch.

I wouldn't call the appearance "rare" - Tony Wilson afforded them exposure most bands weren't privy to.
Also - the dual Peel Sessions have been available in the US for years, and the import of Still (the only JD recording with a clearly drunk Ian Curtis) and a live "Sister Ray" from the Moonlight. Spend the money, it's worth it.

Exactly...to each his own....and my own says this crap sucks. I am 38....I have been in radio since I was 14. I have played every format out there, and Joy Division is barely a blip on the the radar.....why? Maybe because they are an obscure, boutique band. I have nothing against you liking them....IMHO play some farking Sabbath, or CCR, or Alabama ThunderPussy, or some Elvis....anything but this ear ache of a band.

OK, I was all about the whole "to each his own" thing, but those bands are equally atrocious. But, I'm younger, and with adequate head trauma and exposure to NASCAR, my opinion may change eventually.

Same thing for me. I was never really into their music until I sat down and read their lyrics. My jaw dropped. I'm thinking to myself, a 22, 23 year old kid should NOT be feeling this way. I'm amazed his band members, friends, whoever, didn't see the warning signs coming.

Songs like Isolation, Dead Souls, Ceremony, Love Will Tear Us Apart are some deep, heavy and serious shiat. My girlfriend cant even listen to the music because now that she knows the words, it disturbs her too much. She says its like listening someone's suicide note set to music.

I hate Joy Division covers (with the exception of Radiohead's cove of Ceremony) but I think this girl (new window) does an AMAZING job with Love Will Tear Us Apart. Really puts the emphasis on the lyrics (about his failing relationship with his wife), which, hard to understand in the original, are farking bone chilling. Especially when you consider that he killed himself a few months later. AND he was only 23 years old when he wrote this.

Lots of people write angsty, angry break up songs around that age. But this shiat is more intense than that. Ian, obviously, wasn't faking it. This kid was in a lot of pain.

Its farking insane.

(really, they are the only ones I've made thus far this year [and I only bought them because I listened to them all the way through first. You hear me RIAA? I don't buy until I listen. I don't listen unless there's a process by which I'm allowed to do just that very thing. That's why I utilize Napsterclones.])

Ahem. Anyway, enough with the prelude:

"A Woman a man walked by" by PJ Harvey & John Paris
"Sweetheart 2005" by Madeleine Peyroux
"The Complete Chess Masters: 1950-1967" by Little Walter

"It's Blitz" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

If I'm not mistaken, I believe this clip is from the movie "Urge A Music War". If you like this type of music, try to find this movie. Some highlights include, Echo and the Bunnymen, Devo, Gary Numan, The Police and many others. The movie came out in the early 80's and its all live music.

No, there was a documentary released called "joy division"

"control" was a biopic released by Ian Curtis' wife. "joy division" was made by the band.
