DamnYankees: How does *ANYONE* find these Christian arguments compelling?

Compelling, no. Entertaining, hell yes. I love how at the end he tries to make the point that someone wanting to live how ever they want is a bad thing. Pretty sure there was a country that was founded on those principles.

Why do the fudies think that atheists secretly believe in god and are simply mad at him? I tend to think that the average atheist has far fewer questions about the existence of god than the average religious person. They really have to bury their heads in the sand and hum at the same time to believe that the earth is 6000 years old and Noah put 2 of every animal on a boat.

It's because the final and hardest step of truly accepting that you were created by some sort of sky magician is forgiving him for putting you in this awful place.

You don't hear about that part of conversion much, but, that's probably why.

At first I thought:

1. Who thought it would be a good idea for Christian radio to adopt the shock jock format?
2. Why did Christopher Hitchens think it would be a good idea to appear on such a program?

I listened to it, anyway - and it was fun to listen to Hitch to make a fool of the host and the format.

He does it for fun. And he handles it better than anyone. I think the better question is why any Christian radio host thought this would go well for anyone but Hitchens.

I would think a fundamentalist Christian is capable of deluding him or herself on many levels.

THIS.

Hitchens is journalism incarnate. surly, hateful, nigh-perpetually drunk, half-mad, scary smart, and always asking questions. his appearance on Penn & Teller's Bulls**t is one of the high points for that show. matter of fact, gonna go watch that on YouTube now, y'all have fun.

I am a self-professed atheist. Who else is qualified to profess what I do or do not believe? I am quite "vehement" in my assertion that any claims have to be supported by evidence before I will accept them as valid.

And I am certain that I have never done anything to you that would warrant you calling me a dipshiat. Therefore, yours was a completely unprovoked attack.

I'm reasonably convinced that I really am a better person than the type of person who insults strangers for no reason.

False equivalency. When secular government supports say "no prayer in schools," they don't say you can't pray in school. Just that you can't force people to do it as an organized prayer. What the religious numbskulls want is for everyone to pray, and those who don't to be forced to under some misguided idea that the 1950's and 60's were some sort of holy utopia where nothing bad happened and all of our ills are tied to the lack of "God" in our lives.

I tried, but at question one I realized that I'm not a good person, or at least, not good enough for their quiz. Let's face it, I have sex for fun, I'm a pagan with pagan tattoos, I watched two gay guys have gay sex in a baptismal pool, I've broken 9 of the 10 commandments, and that only counts if it was 'directly' killing someone. Indirectly, however, might be a 'yes'. Last time I was in a church I demanded an explanation of how the hell Adam and Eve could be the only people on earth, have two sons, only two sons, and for them to have gotten married, then I warned him that after answering that question I was going to pull out the science books in my car and we were going to tackle that flood issue.

swaniefrmreddeer: Why do the fudies think that atheists secretly believe in god and are simply mad at him?

Probably because of the atheists that are just lashing out at their "Christian" parents. The ones that go around saying "lol xtians are stupid; atheists are smrt." The ones that are atheists as a reaction to Christians instead of having just come to the conclusion on their own.

I believe those atheists to be in the minority. Just like I hope (and pray) the evangelical r-tards are in the minority of Christians. But both sides point to these people on the other side and say "SEE?!! They're WRONG!"

And herein lies the big difference between Jewish Morality and Christian Morality, at least from a theological prospective.

Jewish theology takes the position that everybody has the potential to be a good person. The ten commandments are a list of things that people can do to be a good person.

Christian theology takes the position that nobody has the potential to be a good person. Everybody is a sinner because of original sin. Kirk Cameron's view of the ten commandments extrapolates each commandment out such that no one could possibly live by them. For example, the prohibition against murder is widened to encompass simply being angry at another person.

If everybody is a sinner and can't possibly even attain a tiny modicum of goodness because of humanity's fallen state/original sin, then what's the point of trying to be a good person... especially since accepting Jesus as Lord means you're going to heaven anyway.

At least, that's one athiest/lapsed Jew's perspective on the matter .
