That very first paragraph is the reason why Americans are so gosh darn stupid about domestic and foreign affairs.

For much of the public, it is the most widely anticipated appointment to the new Obama administration: Who will be the first dog?

I laughed, but inside I cried.

Maybe, JUST MAYBE, he's waiting 'til the girls have their summer break. Anyway, they probably picked it out and sent it to the trainer by now.

However, I liked the article. NPR does a good job with "tongue in cheek" reporting.

The one where they teach the difference between "spring" and "summer?"

Look at it this way. If the bulk of people are worried about the dog, then they aren't voting.

I'm encouraged that Obama is being more careful about the dog he chooses than Bush was about, say, who he appointed as the head of FEMA, for example.

He should have picked a large cat instead. Like a leopard or minx or mountain lion or something.

Or a ferret. The Presidential ferret.

Or an iguana. Those things are cool. He could wear it on his neck at summits.

I think Voting for the WH dog would have been a better way to select the dog. The TOTUS recommended this approach.

O - Black Lab
O - Spanish Water Dog
O - Rescued Mixed Breed
O - Nancy Pelosi

According to Politifact's scoring system:

PROMISES KEPT: 23
COMPROMISES: 7
PROMISES BROKEN: 5
PROMISES STALLED: 3
PROMISES IN THE WORKS: 62
YET TO TAKE ACTION: 414

Considering we're only like 80-some days in, that's pretty good. (And anyone who thought he'd have a 100% success rate is kidding themselves, though a few of the rulings I do take issue with.)

NotARocketScientist: dySWN and IStateTheObvious are you paying attention? Part of what is taking so long is he is finding a dog of the right breed from a shelter.

I've been paying perfect attention. His dog is coming from a breeder, not a shelter. Purebreds of any kind are rare in a shelter. So he is going to get a purebred from a breeder, and those breeders will see an uptick in demand. Or he could get a mutt from a shelter and there would be an uptick in adoptions.

So from where I sit, he is condemning thousands of dogs to death, all because his little girl might get a sniffle. Sounds fair.

/Exposure to allergens at a young age is a GOOD thing
//That's how the immune system develops...exposure to 'bad' things

NotARocketScientist: dySWN and IStateTheObvious are you paying attention? Part of what is taking so long is he is finding a dog of the right breed from a shelter.

PS...even if it does come from a shelter, which I have not seen any evidence that it will, it will still drive others to the breeders so they can get the same kind of dog he has. So whether it is provided by a shelter or a breeder, he is condemning thousands to die.
