Ridiculous.

These guys are hateful fearmongorers, and no one should listen to them, but to say they are directly responsible is it's own level of bullshiat.

Man listens to Fox News. Fox tells him that Obama is going to take his guns away, repeatably. Man becomes afraid, and when cops arrive at his house, he assumes that they are here to take his guns and opens fire, killing 3 police officers. Who gave him the idea that he was going to take his guns? Without the idea, he wouldn't have opened fire, i.e. they are responsible for the deaths of those cops.

no, no, no - clearly this is the gun manufacturer's fault. if he didn't have a gun to begin with, he couldn't have shot anyone

I tend to think that he just didn't bother to do a google search to begin with.

Besides, this tea party stuff is something being promoted actively by Fox almost exclusively. It's their baby. No one else gives a fark.

I thought Rush, Bill, and Sean were the worst it could get. And then Beck came along with closeups on his eyes for an entire hour, crying on camera almost every show while calling for a violent uprising to "save" his version of America, and simulating lighting his friends on fire.

The others were just annoying. Beck is just plain scary.

No, it makes a lot more sense.

1) Glenn Beck gets whipped up into an insane fervor about Obama coming to take their guns away on TV.
2) Stupid people believe that Glenn Beck is not clinically insane, get whipped into same retarded fervor.
3) Guy who believed that Obama was coming for his guns shoots two cops.
4) Glenn Beck: "Boy, I just do not understand why people would connect me to the guy that thought that."

For a guy who can't go five minutes without thumping his chest over ratings, it's kinda weird that Bill O'Reilly is being taken down by tiny, insignificant, little GE/MSNBC.

TomFooleryWhat 2009-04-11 12:37:27 PM
How long until O'Reilly, Rush and Hannity start getting jealous of Glenn Beck's increased popularity and start trying to tear him down a little?

moriarty23 2009-04-11 12:37:54 PM
OK, I'm willing to give the benefit here, so far only the cop killer and the church massacre seem to have stemmed from these reactionaries, that is a small enough incident size that we can say maybe these guys would have snapped without any help. however, that has to be a line; our local guy, Gary Nolan does nothing but take calls pledging allegiance to a rebellion, this Bauchmann is a sitting congressman calling for an armed rebellion. At some point, crazy becomes a safety concern.

I'll agree that the train of thought to reach the conclusion is more logical when it's beck and co. instead of video games, but the problem I have with both arguments is the lack of personal responsibility in both cases. I find it kind of patronizing to simply characterize his viewers as 'stupid people' who believe every word he says without question. And anyone who takes anything a talking head on tv says at face value, regardless of what the network logo in the corner is, clearly has enough other issues going on to make blaming the talking head a bit disingenuous.

To paraphrase what I said in an earlier thread:

Look at this

Your complacency will only aid and abet our national suicide. Remember, they wouldn't dare bomb Pearl Harbor, but they did. They wouldn't dare drive two planes into the World Trade Center, but they did. They wouldn't dare pilot a plane through the most sophisticated air defenses in the world and crash into the Pentagon, but they did. They wouldn't dare pass the largest spending bill in history, in open defiance of the will of the people, but they did!

See, it's simple. Obama and the Democrats in congress are the moral equivalent of the Tojo-era Japanese and Osama bin Laden.

Thomas Paine told me so.

This eliminationist rhetoric is dangerous stuff. And the advertisers on the Glenn Beck show are encouraging it. It's about time someone with a video camera started asking the CEO's of the companies that advertise on his show whether or not they consider Obama to be equivalent to Osama Bin Laden, and then point out what their advertising dollars are subsidizing.

And ask Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch while they are at it.

This is irresponsible, amoral crap.

But there ARE people who take Beck and O'Reilly seriously. REALLY, there are. Yes, they have issues beyond that if they do, but it's still a fact that they DO. And Bill-O and Glenn KNOW this, and so they have a RESPONSIBILITY to keep that in mind. And so do commentators on the left - they just tend not to go all fear-monger-y.

I still can't figure out whether this is really just performance art taken way too far by Beck, or some kind of act for ratings, because I don't think he really is that nuts. I used to listen to him regularly before his show was syndicated when he was on in Tampa market, and he was a pretty reasonable, middle of the road kind of guy. The only time he would sound as nuts as he has lately was when he's pull this stunt he called the "Schlub Club", when he'd set it up some kind of nutty scenario at the beginning of the show, tell the people who were listening at that time to call in and play along, and then start with these crazy off the wall things during the hour when most people would be tuning in as they were driving home from work. People who hadn't heard the set up earlier would then call in and be outraged, and eventually he'd let everybody know that the whole thing was a joke.

It's like he's doing the Shlub Club thing 24/7 now, and I keep waiting for him to say, "just kidding, I got you all", but he keeps it up.

/Back then, it was hilarious
//Now, it's not funny anymore
