Well I see they do what they do best:

Get the press to namedrop a bunch of cool bands on their account.

I wonder if they've learnt how to play music since they last past into obscurity without anyone noticing, in the 19th century.

Except their last two proper albums -- Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped, respectively -- were by far their most accessible, critically-praised albums yet.

If you're going to troll, at least try to be "with it" enough to accuse them of selling out and going soft.

I'm guessing they should be Subsonic Middle-Aged by now.

I never thought I'd see those band names in a Fark headline. Sonic Youth must be doing something right.

I listened to my first Sonic Youth album not too long ago. Nurse. I thought it was great. How does it compare to their other albums?

yeah, namedrop all you want...

but surely you mean AMON DUUL II and not regular old AMON DUUL...

right?

Doesn't anyone here listen to anything that those of us who grew up without dinosaurs might listen to? Who the hell are these "Sonic Youth"?

You have never listened to Dirty?

I laugh in your general direction.

You're supposed to encourage people to listen to good music, not taunt them. :)

Name dropping bands someone might never heard of otherwise... and so musically "worthless" they have inspired thousands of musicians...most notably Nirvana...

Yes, squire, they are complete Wentzes. Thank you for enlightening us.

I think "Amon Duul" pretty much always actually means Amon Duul II.

I love the KRAUT.

Guru Guru,Can,Ashra Tempel,Neu!,Popol Vuh,Faust and most of all....

THE COSMIC JOKERS

if you dig the kraut, google "Cosmic Jokers"
make sure and also check out the allmusic.com entry as well.

Even though "Cosmic Jokers" was basically a sham,it is without a doubt one of the most stellar examples of "Kosmische Musik" ever recorded.

I've heard/read band members refer to it as simply "Nurse". Then again I've also heard them refer to it as "Sonic Nurse".

Sooooo...both you's might very possibly be correct.
/no matter what moniker you refer to it as, I considered it a fantastic addition to their extraordinary wonderful oeuvre.

i gave sonic youth a chance back in the 90's, when the washing machine album came out.

they sounded generally bored and disinterested in what they were doing. i got this "listen to how random and obscure our opinions on stuff are, isn't it cool man?" vibe about them.

/sorry if i sound like i'm trolling. SY is just a big head-scratcher for me

eh, Sonic Nurse is half good, half crap, IMO. Rather Ripped is much more consistent. But EVOL, Sister, and especially Daydream Nation are essential.

what's a decent start for Popol Vuh? I only really know of them as a reference to a couple Flying Saucer Attack tracks.

Yeah, I don't love Sonic Youth, but they will always get a pass from me for EVOL and Daydream Nation. Also, I would still have sex with Kim Gordon, because, I mean, she's Kim Gordon.

Why is it that I had to read through so many paragraphs before the first mention of Sonic Youth or anything resembling a review? Jeebus. Less is more, man. Even MORE so when you're reviewing Sonic farking Youth.

I'd also like to add "fark THAT WEBSITE" for not including Mark Ibold (of Pavement) in the pic on the article. He's a full-time recording and touring member. I'm surprised they didn't use the publicity shots from Goo with Kim's "Eat Me" shirt and Thurstons (then) ironic Pac-Man toque.

Zombie Eater 2009-04-11 10:39:50 AM
I understand why so many people have a hard time getting into Sonic Youth. I know I've found myself loving some of their stuff later on that I'd found hard to listen to in the past. Personally, they're one of my faves. Like others here, I'll tip my hat to EVOL and Daydream Nation in particular.

The trick is to let the album play in the background while you are otherwise engrossed in something else, particularly something that gets your hands messy to the point that you don't wanna touch your music player of choice and you can't stop to wash your hands. I know it sounds stupid, you don't have to tell me. When you're forced to listen, you just might start to appreciate the way they make alternate tunings, noise, and atonal guitars work so well.

Or, you might still hate them. Different strokes, and all that.

/can't believe the band's about 30 years old now...

Alamo_Melt 2009-04-11 11:15:45 AM
What, no Sister love?

I'll be in the car alone with Kim then...

What can you tell me about them?

Zombie Eater: The trick is to let the album play in the background

I would say Daydream Nation doesn't require background listening to get into. I can understand being put off by pretty much everything else they've done, but I question anyone's music taste if they dislike Daydream Nation.

Not too familiar with them, but what little I've heard comes off as a goofy King Crimson. Not that bad musically, just the goofiness gets to me after a while.

Understandable, but unfortunately the vast majority of their 90's stuff is garbage. SY is my favorite band and I've seen them many times live, but their 90s material (Washing Machine, Thousand Leaves, Experimental Jets..., etc.) is mediocre, at best. And don't get me started on NY ghosts & Flowers. so awful.

Start off with Murray Street, you can not go wrong with that masterpiece.

I wouldn't go that far. Their 90s stuff was extremely hit-or-miss. Almost 50-50. But it does seem to be the "SY is just noise!" crowd seems to be those only familiar with 90s SY.

Yeah, I might've gone too far with that statement, because within those albums you'll find some of their best songs ever recorded (e.g. Diamond Sea on the album Washing Machine).

But yeah, the crowd that doesn't get Sonic Youth usually stumbles upon their 90's stuff first, and that's too bad.

That's my cue.

I love the full-length 25-minute-long alt. version found on "The Damaged Room" better. But as edits of originally-19-minutes-in-length songs go, this isn't anything to badmouth too harshly. (unless you're not a fan of course).

I'm of such a vintage that my first exposure to them was purchasing their "Confusion is Sex" album. On vinyl. Just after it was initially released. (I liked the cover art). I agree that they have been hit or miss. But their hits are of such quality that they are transcendently great.

Owned all of their pre-2000's albums on vinyl until I had to move and the "vinyls" box "disappeared". My fists still clench at the memorfy.
