It sounds like Arizona generally doesn't automatically give honorary degrees to its speakers. I'd look at the history of past speakers at that university and see what percentage of them got honorary degrees with this speech. If its low I'd give Arizona a pass, if its very high I'd say they are being partisan.

pd771 [TotalFark] 2009-04-10 10:11:11 AM
Yeah, this is a little funny, but my guess is if they just want to avoid criticism like the Universities who gave Bush an honorary degree right away.

My alma mater doesn't confer honorary degrees on anyone. The whole idea seems pretty stoopid to me.

What if it's high because the majority of speakers were much older and more experienced? Would it still be partisan then?

This wouldn't have happened to a white first term president of the US.

The story seems to be generated by the editorial. They'd been better served to submit Obama's name to the honorary degree committee if they give such a shiat.

Non-issue. Personally I don't think they should even have honorary degrees.

While I have always found the practice of honorary degrees to be silly, I don't understand how someone can be qualified enough to give advice in the form of a commencement speech to current graduates, but not be deemed qualified enough to receive a fake degree from the same university.

And he is for abortion and its a So called Pro life Catholic College...so that is not a good thing to do.

The one thing I will give Catholics credit for is that they are both anti-abortion and anti-death penalty. There is none of that strage cognitive dissonance that most fundies have in that respect.

Did the same pro-lifers at Notre Dame have a problem when Reagan and Bush Sr. gave commencement speeches? The two earlier presidents were not-opposed to the death penalty. It would be hyporcritical to oppose Obama and not the other two.

Which of these justifies him getting the degree?

Two best sellers? Lot of people with two best sellers and no honorary degree.

Setting up an organization run by ACORN - a group now under investigation by Congress for nationwide voter fraud?

Getting elected POTUS, half white or not, doesn't justify getting one either.

Can you name any that gave him a honorary degree within six months of his taking office? This is a serious question, not a troll.

And good for Arizona.

You folks are just as bad, if not worse, than any of Bush supporters.

Catholicism of late has been trying to out evangelicalize the evangelicals. It's been a damn sick decline to watch if you've been raised in the Catholic tradition of social justice -- where yes, they abhor abortion, but not over feeding the poor or education.

Personally, to watch the Church turn into yet another arm of the wingnut fringe makes me ill. And I no longer claim it culturally, nor personally.

Because, locally, they've been all to happy to put up their faux baby grave yards -- yet not a peep about our wars of aggression.

It's not a religion, it's a political faction.

I have not even commented on the story. You commented twice once calling for the HERO TAG!!!1!! and once saying they will see a big jump in applications which won't happen for several reasons, one of the biggest being that they stop accepting applications March 1 and the second is that most of those applying like Obama.

So you can take your fail sunny side up with a side of butthurt this morning.

Hasn't pretty much everyone here (except you and your WOO-HOO HERO!!!! post) been saying this is a silly non-story?

LibertyHiller 2009-04-10 10:45:28 AM
I expect that Obama will collect a lot of honorary degrees both during and after his two terms in office. If I were running a third-tier state university, I wouldn't pass up a chance to associate my school with the President of the United States. I certainly wouldn't blow an opportunity to put my school's name near the top of the list.

But then again, we are talking about Arizona State, which from all reports behaves as if it's a branch of BYU, but with less emphasis on academics.

I went to ASU and I'm proud of this stand they are taking. Just as we don't accept basically everyone who applies and just like the fact that most of my high-school classes weren't harder than my college ones: we have almost impossibly high standards. The End.

I assume you complained when the Jesuit university Boston College gave a pro-choice Condi Rice an honorary degree? Oh, you didn't? Plenty of "conservatives" were on their soapbox to attack the protesters to her visit though.

Pretty much. Others used for circle jerking as of late:

"Obama uses a teleprompter, what kind of idiot needs one? What? Other presidents used teleprompters? Oh, umm... *waves arms wildly* BARNEY PELOSI DODD ACORN!!1"
"Obama gave the Queen a new iPod and bowed to King Abdullah! I'm OUTRAGED!"
"North Dakota and Kentucky are Obama's Katrina and Rita!"
