Poor poor Christians.... They wake up one day and there is a black president and now they are being told they can't discriminate against gay people... What would Jesus think about his followers not being able to prejudge someone based solely on their sexual orientation ? He wouldn't be happy about it that's for sure.

Might marry this man some day, and it's perfectly legal here in Canada.

b/c they think being gay is a choice, a choice to disobey the teachings of the bible.

you can't reason with crazy. keep suing them.

it would be a decent argument if they could specifically point to how hetero rights were being threatened. they can't or haven't come up with a valid argument so it's open season on hypocrites. and with some of the churches being threatened to lose their tax free status, they have no choice but to cave.

ninjakirby [TotalFark] 2009-04-10 02:30:04 AM
There is some support for their argument, but over all these cherry-picked cases are simply be expounded upon as the few and far between negative results of social change.

In the photographer case for example, it should certainly be allowed for a private business to refuse service to whomever they wish. The owners of the business simply put their foot in their mouths and violated Anti-Discrimination laws in the process. The lawsuit was pretty bullshiat, but 6,000 dollars in attorney fees is not the end of the word people farking in the streets children being abused and their minds warped picture that is trying to be painted.

Conversely, the case here in California is cut and dry discrimination, and patently illegal. The woman was treated with fertility medication, underwent all necessary tests and procedures, and was only denied the final stage of fertilization and implantation due to the staff members discovering her sexual orientation. Religious freedom is highly protected in California, but it doesn't grant the ability to override the rights of the individual.

TFA "It really is all about religious liberty for us. The protection to not be forced to do something that is against deeply held religious principles."

Sorry buddy, but there are plenty of restrictions on what you can or can not DO, even in religion. No polygamy, no distributing peyote, no sacrificing goats, no discriminating against homosexuals.

If I was the Gay couple wanting to get a photographer for my ceremony I wouldn't want to support a bigots business, If he told me he wouldn't take the job because I was Gay I would have happily went and found a photographer that wasn't an A-hole. In these tough economic times It has to be bad for business to automatically rule out any part of your customer base.

Faith organizations and individuals who view homosexuality as sinful and refuse to provide services to gay people are losing a growing number of legal battles that they say are costing them their religious freedom.

take the religious angle out of it and you have one scary situation. State and local governments telling a private business organization that they HAVE to do something? how is that a free market type situation?

hmm...then again, we are trending authoritarian these days. Everyone will support it under the misguided notion that this is somehow all about gay rights, then express surprise when this comes back to fark 'em over later.

and 'round and 'round we go.

Some scholars also point to Bob Jones University, which lost its tax exemption over a ban on interracial dating and marriage among students, even though it claimed that those beliefs were religiously grounded. Some legal analysts suggest that religious groups that do not support gay rights might lose their tax exemptions because of their politically unpopular views.

Good!

Also, this isn't about views being "politically unpopular" (lots of scaremongering weasel words throughout that article.) It's about discrimination.

That discrimination and open gay-bashing are becoming politically unpopular is a good thing. Cherry-picking Bible verses to support bashing a minority group should not be tolerated.

Fun fact, there are many many many more Biblical passages allowing and even encouraging slavery than there are passages that have been interpreted as condemning homosexuality.

There are already laws in place telling private businesses that they can not discriminate by race, creed, or gender.

Do you find those laws misguided too?

The hole thing?

Obdicut: But yeah, I think the photographer lawsuit was bullshiat unless there was more to it.

I read a couple of different articles on it, one was a press release from the group that defended the photographer. Near as I could tell, they went to hire them, they declined citing they didn't want to endorse homosexuality, so the couple reported them to the Human Rights Commission for discrimination, which held a 1 day trial and made the photographers pay the attorney fees.

In principle it's a grand idea, but the outcome is simply greater insularity and homogeneity among classes and cultures, which breeds misunderstanding and contempt. (I'm talking small market, city type stuff). The ability to use greater numbers and ipso facto segregation and discrimination, or using minority numbers of specialized fields (pharmacists in a small town come to mind) to control a population has serious problems in both short and long term.

Maybe they should go to Christian Band Camps. That's where a friend of mine got laid at the age of 14 for the first time. He called him several times during the next few weeks. I guess it was a one shot deal.

That's not a true story. The true story is that a friend of mine got laid at Christian Camp at the age of 14, and he spoke with the girl several times. They dated, but it didn't work out, and that was it. He became an MLB player and made about $5 million dollars during his career, but only after becoming a Born Again Christian. After all the women and drugs and hedonism, he became a better baseball player after he quit all that. Surprise!

Okay, you have the luxury of being against anti-discrimination laws because you are a free-market ideologue who is still clinging to the fervent hope that the American system didn't collapse due to this ideology, but due to some other, unrelated factor.
