Who?

That was one of the worst written articles I've ever read. I mean... that was really bad.

Met him once backstage. Nice guy, but then again performers are usually nice to radio people. Not giving him a pass for this episode, but hey, we all have bad nights.

Doug, Doug, Doug.

You've been in the business over 20 years. You've toured all over the country, and had gold records.

So why don't you know you're supposed to beat up your wife or girlfriend---not your son???

THAT'S country.

For my money, I'd Be Better Off (In a Pine Box) is one of the best damn and most depressing country songs ever made.

You can get arrested for spilling your beer and your cousin leaving you?

Thank God they didn't leave a question as to Todd Berry's occupation is.

"Doug stone was a staple in country music radio," Todd Berry, Operations Manager of 92.5 WPAP said.

Todd Berry is operations manager for 92.5 WPAP in Panama City.

Man, no kidding. This is what passes for journalism today? It reads like an 8th grader's blog.

Also, FTFA:

The officers claim Stone was intoxicated, but because they could not prove he was driving. He supposedly told officers he hit a curb.

Fail.

WPAP in Panama City is owned by Clear Channel communications, and when the Dixie Chicks spoke up about how they didn't believe in the Iraq war, Berry waged a several months long smear campaign against them.

Doug Stone is a drunken, deadbeat dad with severe health issues who was down partying with the kids during spring break. The Panama City Beach police had just let him go on a DUI where he wrecked his car, but had to arrest him when he attacked his kid after the boy spoke to him about his behavior. If the beach police had done their job instead of giving Stone a celebrity worship "get out of jail free" pass, this never would have happened.

Yeah, I interviewed him on the air about a year ago. Seemed like a very nice guy with a great sense of humor. He was going to perform a song on-air for us, but his guitar got rerouted somewhere, so I ran home & picked up mine for him to borrow. After the interview & performance, he hung around and shot the bull for awhile, telling jokes & stuff. Never would've guessed he'd be the kinda guy to lay the smackdown on his kid like that, but then again, alcohol changes people.

I met Doug Stone about 6 or 7 years ago and the guy was a total, total asshole. He thought he could be a morning radio host, so the small station I worked for just east of Nashville held negotiations with him to host his own morning show, on which he would sell the advertising himself and then buy the time from the radio station.

The guy came into the station like he owned the place, treated us all like we were idiots and he was our boss, and left a general bad impression on everyone. Needless to say, the negotiations lasted about 15 minutes before they were broken off.

Total dick.

Now Mark Chesnutt, OTOH, was underwhelming in the warmth/politeness department. Didn't beat anyone up backstage but had a look like he'd rather be having a root canal done than do a meet 'n greet.

Panama City Beach is called the Redneck Rivera for a reason.

When in Rome....

John Buck 41:

Yeah, I talked to Mark Chesnutt a couple of years ago too. Not a bad interview, but like you said, the guy didn't exactly radiate warmth. Micheal Martin Murphy was like that too.

Nicest guys I've interviewed: Probably Aaron Tippin & Keith Urban.

Never had to interview someone who acted like an ass, but I did interview Daryle Singletary a few years ago, and he acted like he either had just woke up with an epic hangover, or was high. It was kind of a funny bit of radio. At least to me.

Odd thing is, for all the country people I've met & talked to... I'm not actually a fan of the music. Jazz & rock (especially jazz) is more my thing.

Peace,
Gib :-)

I did...sorry, interviewed Deborah Allen a few years ago. For all her rep for being a space cadet, she was very sweet and down to earth.

Brooks & Dunn (when they were newbies) came to town when Arista sent them out on their get acquainted with radio tour. My PD and I took them to a local restaurant and Kix pounded down 3 lobsters. Bulls and Lakers were in the NBA Finals and all 4 of us raced through dinner (as quickly as you can race through 3 lobsters) so we could get home and watch the game.

Hated country when I was a kid. Grew to like some of it, love a little, and tolerate the rest. Having said that, now that I'm out of the biz, I don't listen to much other than some early Steve Earle or Jo Dee Messina every now and then. She is incredible live, and it's a farkin' shame she doesn't get the airplay/success that the Taylor Underwoods and Carrie Swifts get.

//whew...mini-bio and rant off

"Who was battered and wished to press charges against his father," Maj. Dave Humphreys, of the Panama City Beach police said.

Huh?

Well, you're probably out of the thread by now, but what the heck...

I guess I should have worded my bit about not being a fan of country music a little differently. To be honest, I really dislike the stuff that passes for country on most radio stations (including mine) these days. A few years ago, it seemed like country music was headed to an interesting place. You had people just starting out like BR549 & The Dixie Chicks, and Trent Summar. Artists who did something different, and it seemed to be catching on. Then all the sudden, poof, it was back to square one with Nashville only pimping out the boring Toby Keiths and Tim McGraws, and the American Idol clones.

So while it's true I'm not a fan of mainstream country music, I do like the alt-country quite a bit. Stuff like Uncle Tupelo, The Jayhawks, Steve Earle, BR549, Southern Culture On The Skids, Trent Summar, and stuff like that.

Peace,
Gib :-)

Nah, I'm still here, thanks to the new feature showing unread posts :) Glad you checked back in. People not in the biz have no idea what a grind it is day after day, playing the same old hackneyed crap, not being able to play a really cool request 'cos it might make a couple people change the dial for 5 minutes (if you can't tell, I don't think much of research, especially when it's based on focus groups 1500 miles away), worrying every day if you still have a job (which is not a problem for me anymore ha ha ha). They just see the glamour (smirk), the free concert tickets, the radio groupies. Okay, the last 2 are true. Oh, and the free T shirts and coffee mugs until R & R drops your station as a reporter. I never expected to get rich; making a good living and having a job I loved was enough, but when the job isn't fun anymore, well...

Take it easy. I'll live vicariously through you.
