Heh, PWN'd.

Well bowing to a "king", especially that one, gives me a good indication of his emotional backbone. If he bows to a "king" abroad chances are he will be bowing to political kings at home as well. Like, say for example, union bosses who control large voting blocks.

As I said in another thread the other day, if I found myself meeting Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of England and all Great Britain I'd probably bow to her. Why? I'm not subject to her, but it would be my first inclination because I see people doing that all the time in movies and whatnot. I'd do it as a sign of respect, even if I'm not her subject.

But then again, I don't have protocol officers and handlers like the President of the United States does. But still, I completely, honestly do not see the outrage over this. I find it odd, but not outrageous.

6/10. personally, i would've a few misspellings or grammatical errors and at least one "libtard" - but on the whole that was a pretty good troll. bravo!

CNN's typical hard on for GOP talking points... no "Ennui" tag?

Uh, you shouldn't bow, you're NOT her subject.

Would you bow to the King of Spain? The Emperor of Japan?

I wouldn't. I'd probably nod as politely as I'd nod to any other head of state. I wouldn't bow to the President of the US, I'd nod politely and shake his hand.

I would bow to the Queen. She's my head of state.

Honestly, that was my impression, as well. Like he got caught up in the moment and briefly forgot he's not supposed to bow, but then remembered at the last second. This is still not a big deal. I don't even mind the story coming out of the White House saying he bent over to shake his hand (although I don't believe it), but it sounds better than, "Well...he forgot."

Newsflash: Politicians will spin anything and their opposition will spin it the opposite way. Like all sensationalism, this too shall pass.

/Gibbs is right--can we move on, please? This is a non-issue.

King of Spain? I don't know the polite protocol for Spain
Emperor of Japan? VERY low bow.
Queen Elizabeth? VERY low curtsy
President of the US? Firm handshake

Whether you're their subject or not, it's considered a gesture of respect for their title to greet the leader of his/her country appropriately according to the culture.

That being said, would you curtsy or bow to PM Brown or shake his hand? I'm inclined to say shake his hand. The Queen deserves a proper English curtsy, or at least that's what my Irish aunt always told me.

There one of these dudes in my computer class who cant get over the fact that Obama bowed to the king. Out of all the things you can choose to not like about the guy, you pick this? Really?

culebra 2009-04-09 10:43:30 PM
We can't have the POTUS showing respect to foreign heads of state. Obama should've spat tobacco juice on his headdress, grabbed his crotch, stared that big sucker in the eye and said "the check is in the mail".

This is what I was thinking. You are not their equal so show some damned respect. The president is their equal, but maybe a short bow for respect might do.

NRSC's Executive Director Rob Jesmer:

One bow, and it was all over for America.

Kiss the good ole days goodbye! As his head dipped, so did America's status, forever into oblivion..

The scare tactic of referring to the economy repetedly or the scare tactic of invoking some imaginary fealty that Obama has theoretically sworn to foreign interests? Both I guess.

I know your a troll, but for fark sake, if you think a stupid bow is as important as the economy, there is something wrong with you. The reaction to this bow is a sad reflection of the current state of the conservatives in this nation.

Sorry, but yeah, I am their equal. This is a fundamental basis of human rights. The days of godlike emperors and kings are over. No person should be bowing to another, unless it's the customary form of greeting (among equals).

Would I? Yes I would attempt to show respect, and attempt tp not make any faux pas in that country.

That being said I am just an ordinary citizen... If I were president, a firm handshake is all the respect I need to show since we are both heads of state (or whatever kings, princes, chancellors and emperors are considered...).

Allow me to add the unspoken comment by Press Secretary Gibbs:

"You're a farking journalist, man. The country is going to hell in a handbasket, you're sitting here front and center, able to ask the representative of the executive branch any question you like, and you want to know about a stupid BOW? That happened a WEEK ago? Where did you go to Journalism school, Ivy Tech? What the hell is wrong with you?"

That's why it's an oh snap, even if that wasn't the oh snap Gibbs intended, and it's why it's on Fark - the site that points out how retarded the media are.

If he wanted to ask a partisan question to make the Obama administration squirm, you'd think he could choose something that's actually important, no?

Buddy I am a Canadian, and in theory she is my queen, but I won't bow down to her. I'd shake her hand, that's about it.

My mom was a real monarchist, believed that the queen was above us (brainwashing victim...raised in the UK). I'd always remind her that the queen poops and pees just like me. First time I said that she had this odd look on her face, it was like in her entire life up to that time she never thought about the queen pooping.
