Instead of the thought out, composed response to the headline I considered posting, I'm just going to put up subby's pic.

I never knew Dio was also the lead singer for Metallica...

MOST craptastic?

Black Sabbath MIGHT have been the best band in the world at one time... but seriously, subby, you're going to put the RJD Black Sabbath albums in the same league with albums by Barry Manilow? The Spaghetti Incident? KENNY FARKING G????

You need to get your craptasmometer recalibrated. Try a Bjork album, those will usually get you in the right ballpark.

GreenAdder [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 12:45:00 PM
He's writing a book? Maybe he'll finally explain what the hell "Holy Diver" is about.

I know what you're saying, but I dunno dude, late Sabbath rivals all comers in the "shiat" genre...

Oh, I'm not defending the RJD Black Sabbath. I thought it licked balls, although I do like some of Dio's solo stuff. It's just that the "shiat genre", as you put it, is a wide & deep category. You have to be creative to be as bad as the very worst (hence the Bjork reference, with that weird unduplicatable chirp she uses). I never thought on their worst day that Black Sabbath descended below, say, "shiatty Bar Band" level.

/I wouldn't walk out of a bar where RJD & Sabbath were playing.
/I wouldn't stay in a bar more than six seconds where Michael Bolton was playing.

If a band is putting out craptastic albums, doesn't that necessarily mean that the band is in fact craptastic?

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 01:51:54 PM
Truth be told, after the first 6, all subsequent Sabbath albums were filled with inconsequential material. We have to admit to this

not necessarily shiatty material, but totally inconsequential

I don't care about Dio's time with Sabbath. I am, however very interested in hearing about his time in Rainbow with Blackmore.

Sorry, Both Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell contain some good tunes. They are at least as good as Sabotage.

And, Dio can still bring it--the voice is strong with the Mighty Dwarf.

you go too far, I'd say after Master of Reality it was crap

Three-Headed Dog 2009-04-09 03:59:54 PM
Dio's first stint in Sabbath was hardly craptastic. H&H and MR are pretty damned good. Unfortunately, this success only encouraged Sabbath. After Dio, they went on to release many albums that really are craptastic.

jj325 [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 04:02:24 PM
Dio didn't ruin Sabbath by joining, Ozzy ruined Sabbath by leaving

RJD can be an annoying dwarf, but I listened to Heaven and Hell a lot in high school. Everything else, with and without Sabbath---meh.

I'll put Mob Rules and H&H into the CD player before I even think about trying to find my Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die! CDs.

Satanic_Hamster: Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell were both very good albums. His work w/ Rainbow was incredible and his a first few solo albums were good.

Yup. Sure, "Mob Rules" is no "Paranoid", but what is? If you produce one of the most important and significant heavy metal albums of all time, there's no shame in not producing albums that are equally important and significant as long as they're good.

Dio has had a hell of a career. It'll be interesting to read about, I'm sure.

I got a copy of the Dio Years and lemme tell ya, it's a different band in some respects but the Black Sabbath Dio stuff is good. That includes Dehumanizer.

Dio was the bomb in Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny, yo!

tarkus1980 [TotalFark] 2009-04-09 04:40:47 PM
Heaven and Hell was light years better than Never Say Die and Technical Ecstacy.

Just wanted to swing my rusty meathook too. Heaven and Hell was good stuff. Rainbow never recovered after Dio was gone.

Dio certainly didnt make the worst black sabbath album, that honor goes to Technical Ectasy.

The only bad Sab is the 85-Aug 1990 hair metal Sab.

All Ozzy-Dio-Gillan Sab matters. Even the less than great songs.

Most of it is essential.

ccguy 2009-04-09 05:56:19 PM
I saved someone's life at a Dio show in '85. Concert started, crowd started pushing near the front, I saw some girl in front of me about to pass out and get trampled. Grabbed her arm, told my friend to clear out a path, and we got her out to the concourse. The girl staggered over to a water fountain, took a drink and staggered right back into the arena without saying a word.

Dio has rocked for a long, long time,
Now it's time for him to pass the torch.
He has songs of wilderbeasts and angels,
He has soared on the wings of a demon.

It's time to pass the torch,
You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you.
We're takin' you to a home,
But we will sing a song about you.

And we will make sure that you're very well taken care of.
You'll tell us secrets that you've learned. Woah!
Your sauce will mix with ours,
And we'll make a good goulash baby.

Dio, time to go!

You must give your cape and scepter to me.
And a smaller one for KG.
Go! Go! Dio! Dio!

The Dio era was the best time for Sabbath!!! 2 solid records and an ok live record. The timing of Dio's arrival was perfect!

Mr. Slippyfist: If you ever find yourself riding a spotted tiger you better get away...get awaaaaaay.

For some reason I remembered it as spots, but it didn't even bother me 'cause I thought it was just more Dio nonsense.

Does he mention a rainbow in every single one of his songs?
